Good kids play violin in the orchestra, cool kids play sax in the big band - isn't that how it always is in school? Of course, that's a cliché. But the big band and symphony orchestra are two different worlds. Here, however, both come together for Gershwin's eternal classics, along with Alain Altinoglu on the piano. Gershwin, the man who supplied American music with the sophistication of the classical orchestra format and the slightly brash sound of a jazzy, fresh wind section, and hits like "Rhapsody in Blue," in which chief conductor Alain Altinoglu can show that he also cuts a dazzling figure at the keyboard. If, however, something honks during the orchestral piece "An American in Paris," it's not the hr-Bigband's fault. No, Gershwin himself wrote car horns into his score. The good kids play violin, everyone else wants to play the horn in the hr Symphony Orchestra.
In Kansas City Symphony, Berlin will encounter a young American orchestra – founded in 1982, it now attracts a wide audience with its innovative programming. On its debut tour with new Music Director Matthias Pintscher it will explore the rich American composing tradition with pieces by anniversary artist Charles Ives, Aaron Copland and George Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue” which is celebrating its centenary this year.
John Goldsby celebrates 50 years on stage and 30 years with the WDR Big Band. This special concert features Goldsby's Baden-Baden Suite, arranged by Bob Mintzer, and other compositions arranged by Vince Mendoza and Michael Abene, showcasing Goldsby's impact on the band and the international jazz scene.
100 years ago, George Gershwin premiered his "Rhapsody in Blue" in New York to a delighted audience, including Stravinsky, Kreisler, and Rachmaninoff. Considered the quintessential American concert piece—joyful, jazzy, sentimental—the WDR Funkhausorchester celebrates its anniversary with a program featuring highlights from Gershwin's Broadway hits, the Rhapsody itself, and other works.
Of course, when musicians from Panta Rhei and the Horst Krüger Band came together in East Berlin in the 1970s, it was not foreseeable that this new band would one day take its place in the annals of German popular music history. On the other hand, it soon became clear that great things were being created here. And by the beginning of the 1980s at the latest - just five years after the band was founded - KARAT were one of the most important German bands – in both East and West.
The Bayerisches Landesjugendorchester will be celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2025. What better way to celebrate than with a concert? Together with their protégés, the BRSO invites you to an entertaining evening in Munich’s Werksviertel-Mitte. After a short appetizer, the programme will feature a work by the young composer Johannes Wiedenhofer as well as Dmitri Shostakovich’s Chamber Symphony op. 110a. While the entire BLJO usually performs together with members of the BRSO under chief or guest conductors – most recently in January 2024 under Sir Simon Rattle – the BRSO musicians will now also be sharing their chamber music expertise.
