Auf Orpheus' Spuren - mit Elke Heidenreich | lit.COLOGNE + Livestream

Date & Time
Fri, Mar 21, 2025, 20:00
Few figures in literary history are as closely linked to music as Orpheus. His melodies tamed animals, moved gods, and softened the hearts of the dead. WDR Funkhausorchester, joined by author Elke Heidenreich, explores Orpheus's legacy, tracing his influence on writers and composers. Featuring music from Offenbach to Reinhard Mey, the evening blends literature, music, and poetic impulses.

Orpheus' Treasure Trove – Cantabile!

Elin Gabrielsson (Violin), Emma Nyman (Violin), Christopher Öhman (Viola), Johannes Rostamo (Cello), Jonas Nordberg (Lute), Marcus Mohlin (Harpsichord), Maria Keohane (Soprano)
In the early decades of the 18th century, a new trend emerged where beautiful arias were accompanied by a violin or a cello. Here, we get to enjoy exquisite singing and captivating instrumental music with the great Swedish soprano Maria Keohane. Some of the composers who embraced the new style were Alessandro Scarlatti, Antonio Caldara, Giovanni Bononcini, and Nicola Porpora – the latter, in addition to writing over 50 operas and numerous other compositions, also taught several renowned singers, including the castrato Farinelli.Since its establishment in 2015, Orpheus Baroque Stockholm has become an indispensable part of the capital's music scene and a meeting place for both philharmonic musicians and some of Sweden's leading freelance baroque musicians. The artistic directors are the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra's solo cellist Johannes Rostamo and the lutenist Jonas Nordberg. The ensemble's more chamber music-oriented approach, as we encounter here, is presented under the banner of Orpheus’ Treasure Trove.

Auf dem Gletscher

Wed, Apr 24, 2024, 19:00
Nicholas Collon (Conductor), Bastian Korff (Moderator)

"It is a simple and tremendous problem of life: that of fidelity", is how Hugo von Hofmannsthal described the core of their third opera together, Ariadne auf Naxos, in a letter to Richard Strauss. To live does not mean to persevere and hold on to what has been lost. If you want to live, you have to let go, forget, get over yourself - constantly transform yourself. This is what a young opera composer experiences in this work when he is confronted with the stubborn wishes of his patron; just like the protagonist of his opera, Ariadne, who, abandoned by her lover, Theseus, expects only death. But things turn out differently... Strauss and Hofmannsthal let the opposites collide: Tragedy and comedy, light music and grand opera, playfulness and seriousness. Thus, in the mirroring of art and life, between gaze and gaze, the unfathomable mystery of transformation takes place. Musical Direction: Kent Nagano Production and stage: Dmitri Tcherniakov Dramaturgy: Angela Beuerle, Michael Sangkuhl
