A concert workshop in Freiburg's E-Werk will feature conductor Oscar Jockel explaining Pierre Boulez's "Polyphonie X" with the SWR Symphony Orchestra. This piece, a scandal at its 1951 premiere, connects Boulez's early and later styles. Following the analysis and full performance, the concert includes Webern's arrangement of Bach's "Fuga Ricerata" and Webern's Symphony Op. 21, highlighting polyphony and musical development, both crucial to Boulez's work. A second performance of "Polyphonie X" concludes the evening.
At the start of the Boulez Year, the Wizemann in Stuttgart will host a unique concert workshop. Conductor Oscar Jockel will introduce Boulez's "Polyphonie X," explaining it with excerpts played by the SWR Symphony Orchestra. This piece, a bridge between Boulez's early and later styles, caused a scandal at its 1951 premiere. The concert also includes Webern's arrangement of Bach's "Fuga Ricerata" and Webern's Symphony Op. 21, both relevant to Boulez's work, and concludes with a second performance of "Polyphonie X."
100 years ago, George Gershwin premiered his "Rhapsody in Blue" in New York to a delighted audience, including Stravinsky, Kreisler, and Rachmaninoff. Considered the quintessential American concert piece—joyful, jazzy, sentimental—the WDR Funkhausorchester celebrates its anniversary with a program featuring highlights from Gershwin's Broadway hits, the Rhapsody itself, and other works.
A three-part sound-space experience celebrating György Ligeti's 100th birthday. Featuring surprises, contrasts, instruments, voices, and 100 metronomes, the program spans the Renaissance to the 21st century. Ligeti, a pioneering composer of New Music, experimented with all musical parameters. His large-scale orchestral works, choral music, and rhythmic harpsichord pieces will be performed by Alain Altinoglu and the hr-Sinfonieorchester Frankfurt at the Alte Oper.
In honour of the centenary of Boulez’s birth, Ensemble Intercontemporain and Les Métaboles revisit cummings ist der dichter and sur Incises, two masterpieces emblematic of his sources of inspiration and compositional process.
Must we still talk about it? About the role of women in society, at work and in music? Absolutely! Equality between men and women may be the law, but not yet the reality everywhere. There is hardly a better opportunity to talk about it than on International Women's Day. The Bremen Philharmonic dedicates itself to the topic with Konstantia Gourzi, one of today's most distinguished conductors and composers, who will discuss the self-image, importance, and visibility of women in music with director Guido Gärtner and conductor Hansjörg Albrecht.
The Festspielhaus Baden-Baden celebrates Pierre Boulez's 100th birthday with several concerts, including two of his "younger" works alongside Bruckner's last symphony. Boulez admired Bruckner, frequently conducting his works. "Figures – Doubles – Prismes" showcases variations and doublings of musical figures, culminating in a re-examination of the earlier work. Boulez also sets E. E. Cummings's poems to music, creating a unique blend of text and sound.
