Organ matinee Thomas Ospital and Emmanuel Pahud

Thomas Ospital (Organ), Emmanuel Pahud (Flute)

Both create music through the flow of air, and yet they could hardly be more different: the powerful, large organ and the intimate, modest flute. In this concert, Thomas Ospital, organist of St Eustache Church in Paris, and Emmanuel Pahud, principal flautist of the Berliner Philharmoniker, demonstrate how well the two instruments go together – with dreamy, often highly virtuosic works by Jehan Alain, Camille Saint-Saëns and Frank Martin. The full splendour of the organ’s sound comes into its own in the transcription of Saint-Saëns’ Danse macabre as well as in Liszt's Consolation and his variations on Johann Sebastian Bach’s “Weinen, Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen”.

If there's one instrument that's gone off the rails, it's the organ! With its thousands of pipes, it offers almost limitless possibilities – and organists have known how to make use of this for centuries: They are traditionally true masters of improvisation. Here, however, the improvisations are based on your musical wishes and the performers try to outdo each other. From church hymns and Bach's famous toccata to Helene Fischer and Billie Eilish – anything is possible! Two combatants have already been confirmed: Thomas Cornelius from Hamburg, who knows the Elbphilharmonie organ better than anyone else as NDR's house organist, and Sebastian Heindl from Berlin, permanent organist of the Gedächtniskirche since 2023 and “ECHO Rising Star”.
