Lied concert with Johanna Wallroth

The Swedish soprano Johanna Wallroth has a flourishing international opera career and has performed several roles at the Vienna State Opera. She had her breakthrough in 2019 when she won the prestigious Mirjam Helin International Singing Competition. Wallroth has appeared with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra on several occasions, and she also made a guest appearance at a romantic concert in 2020.This time, we begin by hearing her perform songs by Clara and Robert Schumann. After the intermission, we are treated to an exciting new discovery: songs by the French mezzo-soprano, pianist, and composer Pauline Viardot (1821–1910). Viardot was extraordinarily multi-talented; alongside her operatic career, she took piano lessons from a young Franz Liszt and frequently played four-hand piano pieces with her dear friend Frédéric Chopin. Additionally, we hear songs by the Swedish composers Gunnar de Frumerie and Tebogo Monnakgotla. Monnakgotla has set Edith Södergran’s Dagen svalnar to music (world premiere). Magnus Svensson is the artistic director of Konserthuset’s Lied concerts. In addition to concerts in the Nordic region and elsewhere in Europe, he has also performed in Russia and the US. Since 2012, he has also worked at the Royal Swedish Academy of Music with re-publishing older Swedish music.

Sibelius' Fifth Symphony is his most performed and beloved. He already felt during its composition that he was creating something great. ”Have received a wonderful theme”, he noted in a diary entry. He had seen sixteen swans, which gave him the idea for the magnificent theme in the final movement. ”One of the great experiences of my life! My God, what beauty.” The orchestra is led by the Latvian conductor Aivis Greters, who has conducted the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra a couple of times in recent years. As a prelude to Sibelius after the interval, we hear the latest orchestral work by the Swedish composer Jacob Mühlrad. The world premiere of Resil was recently performed by the Swedish Chamber Orchestra, and here the work is presented for the first time in a version for a large symphony orchestra. Read more about Resil (opens in a new window)The composer, pianist, and conductor Adolf Wiklund's two piano concertos are among the best Swedish works in their genre. The first concerto from 1906 is grandly romantic in the footsteps of Rachmaninov, spiced with a touch of Grieg and a pinch of his friend Stenhammar. Wiklund was also the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra's second conductor, from 1925 to 1938.As the soloist in Wiklund's first piano concerto, we have the versatile pianist Magnus Svensson. He performs concerts both in Sweden and internationally. He has particularly immersed himself in the art lieder and is the artistic director for Konserthuset’s series of lied concerts. Since 2012, he has also been working at the Royal Swedish Academy of Music with re-publishing older Swedish music.

Bass singers are less common in the world lied singing, but an exception is the Austrian Günther Groissböck, who opens this season's popular lied concert series. Today, he is one of the leading basses in the opera world and a sought-after guest at all the major opera houses, including the Vienna State Opera, La Scala, the Metropolitan Opera, and the Bayreuth Festival. He has particularly excelled in operas by Richard Strauss and Richard Wagner.Concurrently, lied singing has always been a great passion. The album Nicht Wiedersehen! from 2022 includes songs by Gustav Mahler, Richard Strauss, and Hans Rott. Mahler returns here in his programme, alongside songs by Schubert, Strauss, and Carl Loewe.Magnus Svensson is the artistic director of Konserthuset’s Lied concerts.
