Jeanne d'Arc
In 1935, Honegger composed "Joan of Arc at the Stake," a modern mystery play that eclectically blends jazz, modern, Gregorian, and circus music. The hr-Symphony Orchestra presents this oratorio, featuring Oscar-winner Marion Cotillard as Joan of Arc. The Swiss composer juxtaposed the sacred and the profane. The choir and children's choir create magnificent soundscapes, yet there's also a touch of grotesque. A pig, donkey, windmill and wine barrel all appear. Saxophones, prepared pianos, and an ondes Martenot will create astonishing orchestral effects.
