Read full text

Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra / Yefim Bronfman / Manfred Honeck

Wed, Sep 4, 2024, 20:00
Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Yefim Bronfman (Piano), Manfred Honeck (Conductor)
The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra has a distinguished history of promoting new American works. In 1986, for example, it premiered John Adams’s fanfare for orchestra »Short Ride in a Fast Machine«, with which the musicians opened their concert in the Elbphilharmonie Grand Hall under the direction of long-standing chief conductor Manfred Honeck. For Rachmaninov’s mighty »Concerto for Elephants«, whose piano part allegedly has the most notes per second of all the great piano concertos, the Grammy award winning orchestra will be joined by brilliant American pianist Yefim Bronfman. The programme continues in a late Romantic style after the interval with an orchestral suite from Giacomo Puccini’s last opera »Turandot« – even without vocals, great emotions unfold in an arrangement by Manfred Honeck. The work is juxtaposed with Stravinsky’s music to the ballet »The Firebird«, in which Ivan Tsarevich defeats the evil sorcerer Kastschei with the help of a fantastic bird.

Lahav Shani conducts Ben-Haim and Bruckner

Thu, Nov 30, 2023, 18:00
Konzerthalle Bamberg, Joseph-Keilberth-Saal (Bamberg)
Lahav Shani (Conductor), Pinchas Zukerman (Violin)
Recording & Broadcast BR-KLASSIKIt‘s a great mystery what and where the soul is exactly: whether it is immaterial or somehow palpable or a measurable energy – yet researchers have said to have found out that its weight is 21 grams. Opinions differ widely across humanity. However, many agree that this precious essence plays an important role. This season, we want to tie in Anton Bruckner‘s symphonies with other compositions which, in their own way, have a soul-related, and sometimes spiritual, content. In this concert, Lahav Shani, winner of our MAHLER COMPETITION in 2013 and the new principal conductor of the Munich Philharmonic, will conduct the world premiere of a work written by the Baku-born composer Frangis Ali-Sade, who once said: »Every time, music helps me to chase away the problems of life.« Paul Ben-Haim‘s violin concerto is also worth discovering: his scintillating works combine European, Israeli and Arab traditions – because the artist, born as Paul Frankenberger in Munich, fled to Palestine in 1933. The violin concerto from 1960, which at times sounds like film music, turns out to be very stirring, but also exudes a wonderfully soulful tranquillity at times. At the end, Bruckner‘s Seventh Symphony, with which he finally achieved the longed-for breakthrough as a recognised composer in 1884. It captivates with masterly intensifications and heartfelt moments such as in the stirring Adagio – and is one of those confessional works about which it was said that in them there appeared »a changing radiance of a spiritual kind«.

Martha Argerich – Jahrhundertpianistin, Virtuosenlegende. Copenhagen Philharmonic Orchestra

Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
Copenhagen Philharmonic Orchestra (Orchestra), Christoph Gedschold (Conductor)
The Copenhagen Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Christoph Gedschold, presents a profound programme: Haydn’s »Farewell Symphony« and Wagner’s »Prelude« and »Liebestod« from »Tristan und Isolde« reveal a close relationship in terms of content, as death and farewell are fundamentally related. Schumann’s 2nd Symphony is diametrically opposed to this, even though this work was composed during a period of deep crisis in the composer’s life.

London Philharmonic Orchestra

Fri, Dec 5, 2025, 20:00
Sheku Kanneh-Mason (Cello), London Philharmonic Orchestra (Ensemble), Edward Gardner (Conductor)

London Philharmonic Orchestra

Fri, Feb 20, 2026, 20:00
Anne-Sophie Mutter (Violin), London Philharmonic Orchestra (Ensemble), Karina Canellakis (Conductor)

Hamburg Philharmonic State Orchestra / Andreas Staier

Sun, Sep 15, 2024, 11:00
Elbphilharmonie, Kleiner Saal (Hamburg)
Philharmonisches Staatsorchester Hamburg, Andreas Staier (Harpsichord), Andreas Staier (Director)
The innately humanistic sound ideal of Johann Sebastian Bach and his son Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach meets the youthful, romantic gesture of Felix Mendelssohn: the 4th Academy Concert continues the series of Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos that began with the 1st Academy Concert. It is music so popular and widely admired that it was launched into space on a data disk aboard the »Voyager 2« space probe in 1977. Now it is back in Hamburg. His Symphony No. 6, nicknamed the »Hamburg Symphony« is a clear sign that Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach has no reason to be disconcerted by any overbearing legacy of his famous father.
