übelst unverstärkt: Pekka Kuusisto

Date & Time
Sun, Dec 29, 2024, 19:30
A long bar, dim lighting, beanbags and a relaxed audience. This is what concert evenings at »übelst unverstärkt« look like, where musicians from the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra perform with international soloists. Alan Gilbert, chief conductor of the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra, has already dropped by with his viola. Martin Fröst, Joshua Bell, Daniel Müller-Schott, Anna Vinnitskaya and Augustin Hadelich followed with great live acts. And they all had a lot of fun performing in a neighbourhood club and presenting captivating chamber music up close.

übelst unverstärkt: Alan Gilbert

Wed, May 1, 2024, 21:00
Bunker Feldstraße, Uebel & Gefährlich (Hamburg)
Mitglieder des NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchesters, Alan Gilbert (Viola)
Visitors to this alternative concert series can experience the musicians of the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra together with international soloists. The »Uebel & Gefährlich« club in the bunker on Feldstraße is the perfect place for a concert in a special atmosphere. Since 2019, many international classical music stars have already been guests at »übelst unverstärkt«. Alan Gilbert, chief conductor of the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra, kicked things off on the viola. He was followed by Gautier Capuçon, Daniel Müller-Schott and Esa-Pekka Salonen, among others. They all have one thing in common: they have never performed in a club before. Together with the members of the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester, they thus create a special concert experience. The concept of the series is to bring chamber music to an unusual venue and to experience the musical experience up close and personal. But the focus is not only on the music. Through interviews and conversations with the soloists, the audience learns exciting and amusing facts and anecdotes about the works, but also about the musicians themselves.

NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra / Pekka Kuusisto / Esa-Pekka Salonen

Tue, Dec 31, 2024, 18:00
Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester, Pekka Kuusisto (Violin), Esa-Pekka Salonen (Conductor)
They are two of the most exciting musicians in Finland and are now a proven dream team: conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen and violinist Pekka Kuusisto. Together with the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra and two wonderful classics from the orchestral repertoire, complemented by an exciting discovery, they farewell the old year on Hogmanay and New Year and celebrate the new. At the latest since the classic film »2001: A Space Odyssey«, the opening of Richard Strauss’ symphonic poem »Thus Spoke Zarathustra« has been world famous: a trumpet fanfare brightly soars like a shaft of sunlight over darkly rumbling double basses. »We were sleepwalkers, we want to be daywalkers«, Strauss overwrites this work with a phrase from Nietzsche’s eponymous poetry – and in fact radiates the music in typical powerful Straussian imagery of light and heat. Also, with Ravel’s »Boléro«, the first notes are enough for you to recognise perhaps the most beautiful earworm in music history. For around 15 minutes, Maurice Ravel lets the melody wander through the orchestra and become ever more full-bodied – always accompanied by the little drum for which the piece is almost an athletic challenge.

The Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen / Patricia Kopatchinskaja / Pekka Kuusisto

Sat, Sep 28, 2024, 20:00
Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
Die Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, Patricia Kopatchinskaja (Violin), Bettina Wild (Flute), Pekka Kuusisto (Director)
The orchestra as a powerhouse – with its virtuosity and joy of playing, the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen creates electrifying concert experiences. For their first Elbphilharmonie concert of the season, Pekka Kuusisto can demonstrate his talent on the rostrum and, with music by Samuel Barber and Sergei Prokofiev, tease out late romantic pathos and edgy drama from the members of the Kammerphilharmonie. Exceptional violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja can again illustrate on Arnold Schönberg’s violin concerto that classifications such as unplayability have no meaning for her. With Samuel Barber’s »Adagio«, the programme begins with a piece that explores the sound of a full string orchestra in its entire depth. After this melancholic curtain-raiser, a work takes to the stage whose complexities have certainly made some musicians get their fingers in knots. To breathe life into the demanding lines and figurations of Arnold Schönberg’s violin concerto calls for an artist of Kopatchinskaja’s calibre. She combines supreme technique with perfect versatility and musical imagination. After the interval, Kuusisto then plunges into the existential drama of Sergei Prokofiev’s ballet music of »Romeo and Juliet« with the Kammerphilharmonie. Captivating melodies, brilliant orchestration, snappy rhythms and devastating tragedy – with these ingredients, Prokofiev portrayed the greatest love story of all time and in so doing created one of his most popular works.
