In the hopes that in April spring will already be bursting out of the ground, the sky, and people’s hearts, this concert could not begin more fittingly than with Lili Boulanger’s D’un matin de printemps, a sonic representation of springtime. It is an entertaining and wonderfully orchestrated piece that is definitely worth listening to. Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto is a more familiar work, and has found one of its most sympathetic advocates in Vadim Gluzman; indeed, this work has become second nature to him. Additionally, Gluzman has had a long-standing collaboration with conductor Tugan Sokhiev (as well as with BRSO concertmaster Anton Barakhovsky). Chausson’s Symphony in B flat major, a pinnacle of French symphonic music, will round off the programme.

Tugan Sokhiev, who recently stepped down from his post at Moscow’s Bolshoi Theatre, will make his BRSO début in a programme of impressionist music ranging from sensual eroticism and exotic landscapes to a kaleidoscope of visual imagery. Debussy, in Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune, depicts the fantasies of a faun poised between languid daydreams and lustful desire on a sultry afternoon. Ravel invokes the sensuality of the Orient in his three-piece song cycle Shéhérazade: the tales told by this female storyteller from Arabian Nights are musically brought to life in a strange, beautiful, eerie world full of fascination and terrors in equal measure. Finally, in Pictures at an Exhibition, Mussorgsky produced a work that not only recreates visual impressions in sound, but expands each picture into a unique musical cosmos.

»Passion is a state of the soul.« Salvator Dali once said this – and Tchaikovsky can arguably be regarded as the embodiment of this state: He was an emotional man through and through, who often struggled with not being what society expected him to be. Even his nanny called him a »porcelain child«. His states of mind left traces, especially in his most individual symphony, which was premiered in 1893 shortly before his unexpected death. He said he had »put his whole soul into the "Pathétique«: The work outlines different stages of his life with passionate melodies as well as an orgy of bass notes – and concludes with a heartbreaking Adagio. Prokofiev, too, was regularly subject to severe hostility and left his Russian homeland after the October Revolution of 1917 – but was never really pleased with having to live in what he saw as an alien »mental climate«. Shortly before he returned, he wrote the Second Violin Concerto in 1935 during his »nomadic existence«: although it is peppered with sarcastic humour, it follows the great Romantic tradition: one biographer characterised »the almost cliché-like enchanting« gesture of the solo violin in the Andante as »soulfulness« – in which Vadim Gluzman will wallow. A contemporary example of an artist who had to leave his beloved fatherland is the eminent composer Valentin Silvestrov: he fled Ukraine for Berlin. At the beginning of our concert, we will play his »Evening Serenade« from 2002 under the baton of Juraj Valčuha – a very melancholic piece which, thanks to its contemplative limbo, seems like a memory of beautiful and fulfilling hours of times gone by.

Conductor Tugan Sokhiev places this work alongside Lili Boulanger’s impressionistic, shimmering D’un matin de printemps and a newly-composed viola concerto by South Korean composer Donghoon Shin – also an admirer of Mahler. The solo part of the world premiere will be played by Amihai Grosz, first principal viola of the Berliner Philharmoniker.
