Date & Time
Mon, Jun 17, 2024, 19:30
These two Frenchmen are among the brightest rising stars of the early-music scene. The Baroque violinist Théotime Langlois de Swarte was mentored by the star conductor William Christie. And Thomas Dunford has jammed on his lute with Bobby McFerrin. With their duo programme »The Mad Lover«, the two musicians travel back to 17th-century England, an era in which the ostinato groove became a virtuosic engine driving sonatas, suites and fantasias. The inspiration for this programme was a »Ground« from the... Read full text

Pas de deux

Thu, May 16, 2024, 19:00
Florin Iliescu (Violin), Maximilian Junghanns (Violin), Clara Andrada de la Calle (Flute), Sebastian Wittiber (Flute), Peter-Philipp Staemmler (Cello), Sebastian Berner (Trumpet), Jón Vielhaber (Trumpet), Jonathan Cohen (Conductor)

Vivaldi: The Four Seasons

Sun, May 11, 2025, 20:00
Laeiszhalle, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
Le Consort, Théotime Langlois de Swarte (Baroque violin), Théotime Langlois de Swarte (Director)
So much can be captured: what is known as early music (literally, »old music« in German) has long since no longer only been in the hands of the old guard, who did important pioneering work. More and more young artists, trained in specialised degree programmes, are flocking onto the stages of this world to revive the music of the past few centuries in fresh interpretations. One of the current stars on this scene is French baroque violinist Théotime Langlois de Swarte, who – following his performance in the Elbphilharmonie »Fast Lane« series – you can now experience with his own ensemble Le Consort. On the programme is one work that needs no introduction: Antonio Vivaldi’s »Four Seasons«. The collection of four violin concertos portraying the seasons is one of the earliest and most famous examples of programme music – and surely one of the most popular works of all in the history of music. De Swarte now skilfully combines it in his programme with other concertos and overtures by Vivaldi and his contemporaries – and so makes the seasons appear in a new guise.

»The Art of Being Human«

Wed, Mar 12, 2025, 20:00
Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
Phantasm, Laurence Dreyfus (Viola da gamba), Laurence Dreyfus (Director), Camille Jackson (Dance), Amie-Blaire Chartier (Dance), Saeed Hani (Dance), Sami Similä (Dance), Rodolfo Piazza (Dance), Sommer Ulrickson (Choreography), Alexander Polzin (Visual concept)
Human existence is a contradictory business. »The Art of Being Human« explores the complex impacts of this trite fact. The Grammy award-winning viola da gamba ensemble Phantasm thereby ensures a musical performance at the very highest level. Its members put their instrumental mastery into operation for an evening in which old sounds and contemporary dance blend into an inseparable unit and jointly try to fathom the darkest recesses of the human condition. Choreographer Sommer Ulrickson and allround visual artist Alexander Polzin create a multidisciplinary framework in which music and movement come together, connect with each other, hook into each other, collide and cross fertilise. Under the leadership of Laurence Dreyfus, Phantasm plays music of English masters, such as John Dowland, Henry Purcell and William Byrd. At the same time, the musicians interact in the most diverse way with the dancers, who move as partners and yet adversaries around sculptures by the Berlin artist Alexander Polzin. The result is a staged concert evening, which makes full use of the potential of this currently popular format!

Classical Evergreen: The Four Seasons

Sun, Jun 22, 2025, 19:30

The album Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd is one of the most popular musical works of the 20th century. It stayed almost sixteen years on the Billboard magazine list, which collects the two hundred most bought and listened to recordings in the USA in a given week. In the world of popular music, the British band remains unsurpassed. So perhaps a worthy rival should be sought in musical scores and concert performances? Who has not listened at least once to Mozart's Eine Kleine Nachtmusik or Beethoven's Fifth Symphony?Among the classical evergreens, however, Vivaldi's Four Seasons remains unrivalled. The popular violin concertos have received over a thousand recordings, one of which (Nigel Kennedy, 1986) has sold three million copies. They have also been played in at least five hundred films and undergone myriad remixes, the most popular of which is that by Max Richter, and perhaps the oldest was written by Bach himself. It is hard to believe that back in the 1940s, only some people remembered the then more than two-hundred-year-old works. Several pioneering recordings produced shortly afterwards made it clear to the world that no one could talk about feelings associated with atmospheric phenomena more beautifully than the Red Priest in the age of mass phonography and synthesisers. And yet, The Four Seasons is only just being rediscovered thanks to the exploration of historical performance. We wonder if the Red Priest would enjoy the A.D. 2025 version of {oh!} Orkiestra... Very British: Lea Desandre, Thomas Dunford and the Jupiter ensemble

Mon, May 13, 2024, 20:00
Philharmonie Berlin, Chamber Music Hall (Berlin)
Ensemble Jupiter (Ensemble), Thomas Dunford (Lute), Thomas Dunford (Director), Lea Desandre (Mezzo-Soprano)
They are one of the Early Music dream teams: mezzo-soprano Lea Desandre, lutenist Thomas Dunford and his French Ensemble Jupiter. What distinguishes them is their singular ability to perform Baroque works with so much energy and vitality that they sound newly-composed. In the final concert of the series Original Sounds, they will highlight two very different British composers: Henry Purcell, famous for his enthralling music for the stage, and John Dowland, best known for his intimate songs and instrumental works. Both shared a remarkable capacity for capturing emotions in music.
