She was the first lady of jazz. The woman who used her voice like an instrument. Her musical companion Dizzy Gillespie once described her: "You can't look that far. Her talent is like the horizon: the closer you get to it, the further away it gets." Now the songs of Ella meet the songs and standards of Count Basie. **** It's hard to believe: in May 2025, the jazz festival will take place in the Tischlerei for the 5th time and illustrious programmes and stars of the jazz scene will join forces. Experience Handel's music as the perfect template for improvised jazz (5, 6 May). The fantastic guitarist Josho Stephan plays a tribute to Django Reinhardt (7, 8 May), the unforgettable songs that originated on the Motown Records label are interpreted by Worthy Davis on 9 May and Mette Nadja Hansen lends her voice and bends her knee to the incomparable Ella Fitzgerald and The Count (10, 11 May). Two concerts for children aged between 4 and 7 about the "magic dragon Mo", the first trumpet dragon in Pyromania, will conclude the festival on 11 and 12 May.

An exciting and unusual evening of music awaits, blending the theremin with jazz. Carolina and the WDR jazz musicians will showcase their diverse talents, playing everything from jazz standards to pop. The show at Cologne's Philharmonic Hall will also include a brief introductory lesson on the theremin, making this a unique event for curious music lovers.
Themes of farewell, grief, and despair run through this semi-staged concert, leading to a transformation of hope and happiness. The Gürzenich Orchestra ensemble combines string quartet sounds with accordionist Marko Kassl, immersing mezzo-soprano Ursula Hesse von den Steinen's voice in new colors. The program spans a musical cosmos, from Renaissance music to avant-garde Salvatore Sciarrino, baroque opera arias, Billie Eilish, and Astor Piazolla's tango.
Choir and tango? And even a liturgical text together with the most sensual of all dances, how does that fit together? Very well, as you can hear in this concert. In fact, it is a concert of discoveries. Because when do you ever hear a bandoneon in a concert hall? The sister of the accordion was invented in Chemnitz and began its triumphal march when the bandoneon made its entrance into South American tango orchestras at the beginning of the 20th century. Since then, it has become indispensable and in Argentina it is praised as "the best German invention". String orchestra, bandoneon, piano, and our Philharmonic Choir - let yourself be carried away into a musical world full of passion, pride, and sensuality!
