The programme opens with Richard Strauss’s »Don Juan«, a tone poem full of drama and passion. The work is based on Nikolaus Lenau’s »Don Juans Ende« of 1844. In it, Lenau created a hero who, as a free-thinking individual, rises above the decadence and prudery of society. Searching for the ideal woman, he is driven by an insatiable desire from one woman to the next. 40 years later, the figure of Don Juan – precisely because of these qualities – became for Strauss a representative of the modern artist, and thereby an opponent of intellectual hardening. That work is followed by Ernest Bloch’s Schelomo – a homage to the Old Testament characterised by an extraordinary musical beauty and a deeply moving solo voice part. The highlight of the evening is Sergei Prokofiev’s impressive Fifth Symphony. The work demonstrates Prokofiev’s profound understanding of the human drama and the human soul. »The Fifth Symphony embodies his complete inner maturity,« writes Sviatoslav Richter, who was there for the work’s noteworthy Moscow premiere on 13 January 1945, which Prokofiev conducted. »He looks down from a height at his life and at everything that has been. There is something Olympic in that.«

Mozart's "little" G minor symphony, written at age 17, gained fame through Miloš Forman's 1984 film "Amadeus." Mozart valued it enough to request the score ten years later. Completed on October 5, 1773, after his third Italian trip, it's his first minor key symphony, inspired by Haydn's 39th symphony. Mahler's Fifth Symphony quotes Mozart's "Abduction from the Seraglio." Mahler struggled with the Fifth, revising it multiple times. The famous Adagietto, a love letter to his wife Alma, shouldn't be played too slowly.

Wherever it is important to convey the impression of enormous speed, of a rapid, glorious final spurt by means of selected music to moving images, the film and advertising industry prefer to use the well-known gallop from the William Tell Overture. However, this unspeakable habit creates a completely false impression of the entire overture to Rossini’s last opera. Who would have thought to expect the wonderful interplay between the solo cellos at the beginning or the refreshing freshness provided by the cor anglais and flute after the great thunderstorm - or indeed the whole breadth of the canvas that Rossini painted for his magnificent overture?

Thinking of forests in the finale of Mendelssohn’s immortally beautiful Violin Concerto in E minor is a real recommendation inasmuch as the fairies, will-o’-the-wisps and kind-hearted gnomes romping about in it are comparatively harmless creatures. Composed between 1838 and 1844 for his friend Ferdinand David, concertmaster of Leipzig’s Gewandhausorchester, it was intended to be a brilliant piece (»stilo moltissimo concertantissimo«). Mendelssohn joked back that the soloist’s entire first movement would consist of a single high E. In the end, the two Hamburg natives were extremely happy with the result.

Mozart premiered his first minor-key piano concerto in Vienna on February 11, 1785. This concerto in D minor marks a departure from his usual pleasing style. Shostakovich's Tenth Symphony's scherzo reflects Stalin's terrifying image, while the Allegretto and finale assert the composer's presence through his musical initials (D-Es-C-H).
