Then … well, what exactly is this so-called “Ambulance Music”? You’ll find out, but we can tell you it’s not about blaring siren, quite the opposite. Finally, it’s time for film music, as the master John Williams takes us to the Wild West. The music was written for the 1972 film The Cowboys. Nina Stemme | Königliches Philharmonisches Orchester Stockholm | Ryan Bancroft

Mon, Mar 24, 2025, 20:00
Nina Stemme (Soprano), Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra (Ensemble), Ryan Bancroft (Conductor)

Royal Philharmonic Orchestra / Julia Fischer / Vasily Petrenko

Fri, Jan 31, 2025, 20:00
Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Julia Fischer (Violin), Vasily Petrenko (Conductor)
»Julia Fischer plays the violin concerto in a fresh, captivating and energetic manner, with a broad palette of tonal colours and a fantastic technique. Her Tchaikovsky sounds soulful and romantic without becoming sentimental.« Julia Fischer’s fantastic recording of the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto, which is so enthusiastically reviewed here by BR, dates back to 2006. Almost 20 years later, the consistently excellent violinist is still one of the best interpreters of this work, which places the highest demands on the soloist with its breakneck cascades of sound and emotional impact. Béla Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra is also characterised by a special intensity of sound – highly virtuosic and full of hope, it offers the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of its chief conductor the best opportunity to present itself as a top-class orchestra.

Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra / Klaus Mäkelä

Wed, Apr 2, 2025, 20:00
Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Klaus Mäkelä (Conductor)
There are few orchestras that can boast as long a Mahler tradition as the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra from Amsterdam. Even during Gustav Mahler’s lifetime, the orchestra regularly performed his symphonies and helped the composer achieve the fame he enjoys to this day. Klaus Mäkelä, who takes over as the orchestra’s chief conductor in 2027, continues this tradition with a performance of Mahler’s First Symphony. The composer wrote about his work: »It has become so overpowering – it flowed out of me like a mountain stream!« Also on the programme is Arnold Schönberg’s early work »Verklärte Nacht« for string orchestra, based on Richard Dehmel’s poem of the same name. Before Schönberg climbed to the top of the avant-garde and shocked the music world with his twelve-tone music, he wrote deeply Romantic pieces in his younger years, in which he endeavoured to unite the styles of Wagner and Brahms.

Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
Copenhagen Philharmonic Orchestra (Orchestra), Christoph Gedschold (Conductor)
The Copenhagen Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Christoph Gedschold, presents a profound programme: Haydn’s »Farewell Symphony« and Wagner’s »Prelude« and »Liebestod« from »Tristan und Isolde« reveal a close relationship in terms of content, as death and farewell are fundamentally related. Schumann’s 2nd Symphony is diametrically opposed to this, even though this work was composed during a period of deep crisis in the composer’s life.

Hamburg Philharmonic State Orchestra / Kent Nagano

Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
Philharmonisches Staatsorchester Hamburg, Karen Cargill (Mezzo-Soprano), Stuart Skelton (Tenor), Pierre-Laurent Aimard (Piano), Kent Nagano (Conductor)
Bringing Gustav Mahler’s »Das Lied von der Erde« to the stage always takes us on a path down into the depths of late-Romantic turn-of-the-century aesthetics. Of course it is poetry that forms the foundation of the work – albeit thoroughly dubious due to the fact that the words have been translated back and forth so many times from the Old Chinese. So the six songs, the last of which is by far the most weighty, therefore do indeed need to be read primarily in terms of the music and regarded as Mahler’s unofficial Ninth Symphony, as it were. He did allude himself to this way of looking at the work – and also stressed that »Das Lied von der Erde« was »probably the most personal thing ... I have done so far.«
