This concert will not only make the hearts of string quartet fans beat faster, but also delight newcomers to chamber music: with technical brilliance and incredible versatility, the Quatuor Ébène has been among the crème de la crème of the music world for over twenty years – »a string quartet that can easily morph into a jazz band,« gushed the New York Times. For their next visit to Hamburg, the musicians have packed repertoire gems as well as brand new pieces into their luggage. A particular highlight is the performance of a new work by Raphaël Merlin. He was cellist in the Quatuor Ébène until spring 2024 and is now focusing on his international career as a composer and conductor. You may be very curious about what the Frenchman will place onto the stands of his long-standing ensemble. The award-winning foursome also presents Beethoven’s first-ever string quartet before the work commissioned by the Elbphilharmonie. With this adventurous piece, Beethoven opened a new chapter in music history after Haydn and Mozart. Just 70 years later, Tchaikovsky composed his expressive Third String Quartet, which he dedicated to a deceased friend, the violinist Ferdinand Laub – a highly emotional work that expresses a profoundly touching obituary in sounds especially in its slow movement.

Its perfect fusion of precision with spontaneity has made the Quatuor Ébène one of the world's leading string quartets. Together with solo violist of the Berliner Philharmoniker Amihai Grosz and cellist Nicolas Altstaedt – the ensemble presents Peter Tchaikovsky's string sextet “Souvenir de Florence”. Despite the chamber music instrumentation, the composer created a work of almost symphonic dimensions that ingeniously combines Russian drama with Italian grace. The programme opens with a string quartet by Joseph Haydn and highly virtuosic divertimenti by Benjamin Britten.

Composed in 1913, "Le Sacre du Printemps" (The Rite of Spring) is considered one of the key works of the 20th century. The premiere of the ballet in Paris caused a scandal. Only with great effort and by ignoring the boos from the audience, the music was able to be played to the end. The ballet music, which is mostly performed in concert today, shines with almost acrobatic rhythms and sonically exciting combinations of various instruments in a very large and elaborate orchestra. Alone, 20 woodwinds, eight horns, several trumpets and trombones, numerous percussion instruments, and a large string section create a tremendous sound impression. In contrast, Ligeti's "Lux Aeterna" seems to transport the choir alone to distant realms with its soundscapes. It is no wonder that Stanley Kubrick used this music in his monumental film "2001: A Space Odyssey."

The Quatuor Modigliani is acclaimed worldwide, delivering acclaimed concerts in the foremost concert halls. The quartet made its debut at Konserthuset in 2012 and has returned a couple of times since then, most recently in 2020.French Élise Bertrand (also active as a violinist) composed "Lui e loro" specifically for the Modigliani Quartet. She was inspired by a photograph from World War II depicting the bombings and destruction of the Monte Cassino monastery in Italy. Everything lay in ruins, but a white statue of Jesus remained, "as a symbol of resistance and hope."More French music. Maurice Ravel was 28 when he wrote his only string quartet in 1903. It is considered by many to be his first masterpiece. Here, there is much individuality, outstanding richness of colour, and rhythmic liveliness.Tchaikovsky's third and final string quartet is often considered one of his finest chamber music works. It has a Czech connection: his friend and colleague at the Moscow Conservatory, the Czech violinist Ferdinand Laub, had passed away, and Tchaikovsky composed the music in his memory.
