In addition to his career as a celebrated soloist, violinist Christian Tetzlaff performs all over the world with his own string quartet. This guest performance in the Chamber Music Hall opens with Beethoven's late, expressive String Quartet op. 131, the beginning of which Richard Wagner called “probably the most melancholy thing that has ever been expressed in sound”. In his “Choral Quartet”, Jörg Widmann expresses “sounds and phases of futility that come from nowhere and lead nowhere,” he says. The programme concludes with Johannes Brahms' Second Quartet, which steers a lush course between melancholy and joie de vivre.

Bach and Chopin. Two worlds, two geniuses, two points of reference for the tradition of the keyboard. The former is the essence of spirituality, the musical structure and the richness of the baroque world. The latter symbolises musical romanticism. Chopin scholars emphasise the fact that he renewed Bach’s mastery of counterpoint and finesse of ornament, using them as foundations upon which he built a musical world of his own, still much beloved everywhere around the world. Their music serves as the basis for a fantasy of one’s own, and as material to be reworked, for artists for whom playing others’ music is not enough. The twenty-nine-year-old Japanese pianist Hayato Sumino follows in the footsteps of the wonderful eccentric, Friedricha Gulda, whose scandalising improvisations opened secret passages between classical music and jazz. On the sidelines, they are supported by the ghost of Maurice Ravel, who defined the concept of stylisation for the 20th century. In this concert’s programme, you can hear the neverending expansion of the musical universe. Adam Suprynowicz Concert duration (intermission included): approximately 100 minutes

Luka Okros has established himself as one of the most promising pianists of his generation. He has already won eight first prizes in top international piano competitions and performed in 46 counties. Described by critics as “Intense, strong and natural, with an impressive creativity”, Luka Okros has gone on to earn an international reputation for the passion and excitement he brings to his live performances. In addition to his career as a concert pianist, Luka works on creating an album of his own compositions. One of the pieces was filmed and premiered by The Concertgebouw’s Sessions.

From a young age, the brothers Erik, Ken and Mark Schumann were deeply absorbed by the subtleties of chamber music. Then, when they were joined by violist Veit Hertenstein, the Schumann Quartet launched an international career, garnering the highest praise for their “dazzling virtuosity” (Süddeutsche Zeitung). For their debut in our series, the quartet has chosen Mozart’s galant A major Quartet and the dark First Quartet by Prokofiev, influenced by Beethoven’s quartets. These will also be represented by the Op. 127 quartet, from Beethoven’s audacious late period.
