The String Quintet in F major is the only major chamber music work by Anton Bruckner, whose 200th birthday will be celebrated in 2024. The Philharmonic String Quartet and Amihai Grosz, principal violist of the Berliner Philharmoniker, present the piece in this concert. The evening will open with Erich Wolfgang Korngold’s Second String Quartet, which has a distinctive Viennese lilt. A constant in this season’s Philharmonic Chamber Music concerts is the music of our composer in residence Wolfgang Rihm. Here you can hear his dark, finely-spun Grave, written in memory of violist Thomas Kakuska.

“It is the best thing I have written in my life”, declared Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in 1784 of his piano quintet. Many of his most famous works had not yet been written, but the quintet remains a Mozartian jewel, with its melodic beauty and charming dialogues between the instruments. It is no wonder that the young Ludwig van Beethoven was inspired by Mozart’s example to write an equally enchanting quintet. Members of the Berliner Philharmoniker play both works with pianist Kit Armstrong. Contemporary counterpoints are provided in the form of wind quintets by Hans Werner Henze and Wolfgang Rihm.

The new concertmaster Daniel Cho presents a dazzling selection of the finest chamber music gems from Paris to Vienna. A child prodigy of music history provides the prelude, whisking us off to the vibrant Paris of the 1930s. There, the young Jean Françaix honed the zeitgeist and, at just 20 years old, immersed himself in the temptations of this musical centre that was to be the artistic home for so many artists and free spirits in the early 20th century. The musicologist and musician Arthur Hoérée was succinct in his appraisal of the early work »Trio à cordes«: »a masterpiece«. From Paris, the programme moves on to Prague and Erwin Schulhoff, who was one of the most successful international composers of the 1920s before becoming embroiled in the machinations of the politics of the day. At the premiere of his first string quartet, however, success was in the air for him, with the tingling nervousness and the folkloristically coloured, dazzling variety of sound delighting both the press and the public. To this day, the work is still considered a milestone for every chamber music ensemble. That avant-garde is not just a style but an internal way of being, as shown by Anton Webern’s final string quartet. On 12 March 1938, the day of Hitler’s invasion of Austria, he wrote to friends: »I am fully immersed in my work and do not wish to be disturbed.« And so it came to pass that a work of unparalleled concentration and technical elegance was born amidst the brutality of war raging all around. The Sextet by Erich Wolfgang Korngold also demands the highest musical precision and virtuosity. The composer, who in his younger years was regarded as the legitimate successor of none other than Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, also labelled a »child prodigy«, is revered above all for his operas and film music. A prophetic foreshadowing of his great film scores can be heard in the String Sextet.

Back in the first half of the 20th century, it was already popular for French composers and orchestras to place woodwinds at the forefront of the action. It was thought to be evocative and characteristic of the special French style and sounds. Francis Poulenc was one of the most important proponents of this tradition; his music is focused around polychromy and a sensitive poetic voice. »After all the mists of impressionism, wouldn’t this simple and clear art [of Poulenc], renewing the tradition of Scarlatti and Mozart, represent the next phase of our music?« Darius Milhaud’s musings about Poulenc’s future and work were certainly to prove prophetic in the field of wind music. He went on to set standards, even with the few works for wind instruments he wrote, that continue to have an impact to this day. Complementing Poulenc’s compositional spheres is the music of Henri Tomasi, Jean Françaix and Charles Koechlin. Behind the seemingly naïve title of Tomasi’s rural concerto »Concert champêtre« lies a knowledgeable allusion to the music of the French Rococo, all mixed together with the Corsican flair of Tomasi’s homeland. It is then back to the sounds of Impressionism with Charles Koechlin’s Bassoon Sonata. Koechlin was considered an outsider in France at the time it was written, but he managed to create an exceptional work that shows off just how delicate and at the same time wild and intoxicating the bassoon can be. And how many splendid nuances of sound this instrument – usually resigned to the background – is capable of producing. Jean Françaix’s Trio in Four Movements reveals how the 82-year-old composer remains at the height of his creative powers: melodic inventiveness, rhythmic wit, harmonic elasticity and an elegant instrumental movement enter here into a particularly happy union.

Gustav Mahler’s development and work as a composer focussed mainly on two musical genres: symphony and Lied (song). Again and again, the two very different forms approached each other, but the combination of the monumentality of the symphony and the intimacy of the song reached a hymn-like climax in »Das Lied von der Erde«. A compositional legacy based on texts by Hans Bethge that Mahler left to the world, knowing full well that his own death was already waiting for him at the next corner. Arnold Schönberg arranged Mahler’s final song for a chamber orchestra for the concerts of the »Verein für musikalische Privataufführungen«, a work that was finally completed by Rainer Riehn. The arrangement for chamber orchestra turned Mahler’s composition into a masterpiece of its own kind, in which the essence of the original sound is preserved through careful reduction and transformed into a new quality of characterisation and emotional experience.

Music connects and creates identity and community and, like language, it is an integral part of the human experience. Ernst Toch’s »Geographical Fugue« is a good example of how these two forms of expression can be combined to wonderful effect when he transfers the melody and rhythm of language to musical form. Gustav Mahler’s Piano Quartet movement in A minor, composed when he was just sixteen years old with a youthful zeal and enormous reverence for his great role model Johannes Brahms, tells of searching for and finding his own musical language.

The works in this chamber music concert are all about love and connection, in words and through sound: when Johannes Brahms set about composing »Zwei Gesänge«, he had his close friendship with his long-time companion in mind, the violinist Joseph Joachim. Brahms wanted to create a musical memorial to his love and composed the »Geistliches Wiegenlied« for his wedding, based on a text by Emanuel Geibel, but he withdrew the composition and revised it. Together with »Gestillte Sehnsucht« based on a text by Friedrich Rückert, the composer later published both songs on the occasion of another happy event: the christening of Joseph Joachim’s son – and Brahm’s godson.

Richard Strauss’ »Capriccio« seems remote from the world, in the face of the cruelty witnessed in the Second World War. The musical means of the late 19th century are used here in the 20th century to describe the time of the late 18th century. In the string sextet where the action begins, the »rapture« from earth is captured as though in a tableau. Ludwig van Beethoven’s Third String Quartet was also thought to not be of its time, in a very different way. Described as the »patchwork of a madman«, this »crazy« music was met with incomprehension by the public. Beethoven though was deliberately seeking to challenge expectations when he took chamber music out of the living room and into the major concert halls of the day.

This concert takes you on a musical voyage through the history of four female composers and one of the most underestimated female figures in opera history. It begins with Louise Farrenc – an exceptional figure of her time: as a pianist, professor, publisher, cultural manager and mother, she stands both as a pivotal figure in French music, and as an icon of creative combativeness.
