»Good evening and welcome to the radio show with the greatest hits from the last 500 years!« Something along these lines might well be the opening gambit for this concert, which school pupils have devised for other young people. Radio presenter Charlotte Oelschlegel leads us through a radio show with hits from a wide variety of different periods, along with historically accurate »news« and stories about concert life at that particular time. Everything from Bach and Mozart, to modern-day pop... Read full text

On Tour: Holešovice Prague OPEN AIR

Wed, Sep 11, 2024, 20:15
Jakub Hrůša (Conductor)
We’re off to the »Golden City«! It gives us great pleasure to regularly travel with our Chief Conductor to his beloved city of Prague – where he studied and began his career as an internationally esteemed conductor. This year, we are guests at the prestigious Dvořák Festival for a residency – because the audience loves Jakub Hrůša’s captivating interpretations. The opening concert already includes two of his favourite works: Dvořák’s wistful cello concerto, about which he said: »Think of a boy who is in love – that’s the content.« His popular symphony »From the New World« is also highly emotional and has been described as an »expression of his love for his homeland from afar«. On the second evening, we celebrate Smetana’s 200th birthday: the three pieces »Richard III«, »Wallenstein’s Camp« and »Haakon Jarl« tell of love, heroism and suffering. We combine them with a milestone by Beethoven, who was a frequent guest in the Vltava metropolis – and here he even met the woman he called the »Immortal Beloved« in a letter that remains a mystery to this day. His »Symphony of Fate« captivates with its grandiose metamorphoses of the four famous notes through to the magnificent finale. To conclude our visit, we will be focussing on Mahler, who also had Bohemian roots and whose Seventh Symphony is deeply linked to our orchestral history. We are performing it at a very special location in close friendship with our fellow musicians in Prague: At the place of the premiere in 1908 – and just like back then, when our predecessor orchestra of the German opera house »topped up« the Czech Philharmonic for this monumental work, we are now playing together again, music stand to music stand.

Daniel Hope & AIR Ensemble

Mon, Sep 23, 2024, 20:00
Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
Daniel Hope (Violin), Daniel Hope (Moderator), Simos Papanas (Violin), Nicola Mosca (Cello), Nicola Mosca (Irish harp), Emanuele Forni (Lute), Markellos Chryssicos (Harpsichord), Michael Metzler (Percussion)
A melodic voice singing longing notes about the beauty of Ireland or the pub classic that won’t let your legs stand still – this is Ireland as it lives and breathes! Irish music has a long history, although it has only enjoyed worldwide popularity in the last hundred years. Daniel Hope and his AIR Ensemble, consisting of internationally renowned musicians with whom he has already toured the world with »AIR – A Baroque Journey«, are now embarking on a journey into the rich musical world of Ireland and exploring the myths and legends of the island and its music. For Daniel Hope, this musical journey is closely linked to his family history: His great-grandfather Daniel McKenna set off from Ireland over 100 years ago to make his fortune in the world. For Hope, who still holds an Irish passport as well as a German one, this musical discovery is also a journey to himself.

The Sounds of Air

Sun, Apr 6, 2025, 11:00
Filharmonia Narodowa, Chamber Music Hall (Warszawa)
Anita Kander-Marchewka (Flute), Agata Bała (Oboe), Małgorzata Jończyk (Clarinet), Adam Ostrowski (Bassoon), Konrad Gołda (Horn), Gabriel Jasiorowski (Percussion instruments), Barbara Szczęsna-Remisz (Presenter)
The spring wind rustles in the trees, sings merrily in birdsong, chases the clouds away, turns somersaults, fills the fields and meadows with sound... This concert will be filled with music conjured up by wind instruments: the singing flute, the mysterious clarinet, the lyrical oboe, the playful bassoon, the gentle horn and energetic percussion. We’ll blow notes, dance in rhythms, visit the court of a Chinese empress and listen to raindrops falling. Who is curious to know whether the sounds of the air are light as a feather or heavy as a storm? Who wants to find out how to conjure music from the air and look for spring in it?
