Musicians of the Komische Oper Berlin present intensive listening experiences in special locations as part of their chamber concerts. From the festive ambience of the Schiller Theater to the monumental vastness of the old hangar at Tempelhof Airport, with new sound worlds at the Kindl site to enchanting experiences in a tent.
What is home, where is home, what connects people in Berlin across all differences, what is this city for us and what does it sound like? Since June 2024, young people from Marzahn have been asking themselves all of these questions and, together with project designer Kian Jazdi and pianist Hanni Liang, have created a staged evening with an open end in regular workshops that combines performance, setting and light. The aim: to stimulate the creativity of all those present and encourage them to become active through music! Funded by the Senate Department for Culture and Social Cohesion as part of the Youth Culture Initiative and supported by Berlin Mondiale
Pierre Boulez catapulted himself to the forefront of music pioneers in 1955 with his chamber cantata »Le marteau sans maître« (The Hammer Without a Master). Top young talents such as Ema Nikolovska and Sean Shibe, both Elbphilharmonie FAST LANE artists, juxtapose the Boulez with works by the next generation as part of the Hamburg International Music Festival with the motto »Future«: a brand new piece by drummer and Pulitzer Prize winner Tyshawn Sorey (also featured in the Elbphilharmonie’s »Jazz Drums« focus) and »Bel Canto« by Cassandra Miller, which is dedicated to the opera diva Maria Callas. »Le marteau sans maître« is one of Boulez’s most renowned signature works. He took three surrealist poems by the Frenchman René Char from his eponymous collection as the starting point for this composition for alto voice and six instruments. This is not a traditional setting of text to music though. While the verses are sung, they are also interpreted purely instrumentally – resulting in an almost labyrinthine realm of words and sounds that invite the listener in to search and discover.
Felix Kubin, Mark Boombastik and Ensemble Resonanz are on an intergalactic mission: they are collecting sounds for the Plexifon, a cosmic music machine. Guided by their spaceship’s slightly confused computer Tipsy, they fly through the cosmos to planets made of water, parallel worlds and aggressive boulders. Hopefully Tipsy doesn’t miss the right exit… »Twinkle Concerts« is the series of children’s concerts at the Elbphilharmonie that brings the most successful productions from all over Europe to Hamburg. At times funny and playful, at others thoughtful and reflective, the series introduces children to the world of music in a special and unique way.
