NDR Jugendsinfonieorchester / Stefan Geiger

Date & Time
Sun, Mar 16, 2025, 11:00
Johannes Brahms’ Fourth Symphony and Stravinsky’s suite from »The Firebird« are among the masterpieces of the orchestral literature – and also among the favourites of the members of the NDR Jugendsinfonieorchester (NDR Youth Symphony Orchestra). The enchanting story of »The Firebird« utilises all of the orchestra’s sound-painting possibilities; Brahms’ Fourth Symphony sank »deeper and deeper into the soul« of the orchestra at the Berlin premiere, as the violinist Joseph Joachim wrote to his musician friend Johannes Brahms. We cordially invite you to an encounter with these two »orchestra favourites«.

NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra / Stefan Asbury

Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester, Stefan Asbury (Conductor), Stepan Simonian (Piano), Moisés Santos Bueno (Drums)
Born in Teheran, Sara Abazari is one of today’s leading voices in her country’s contemporary music. Her two latest compositions, which were recently premiered in the Berlin Philharmonie and the Konzerthaus, are directly connected with the movement »Woman, Life, Freedom« and the prominent role of women in Iran. »in solidum« is a piece that was premiered in its first version in autumn 2023; the new, large-scale orchestral work by the composer, who studied in Cologne and Vienna, is now being performed by the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra. With Galina Ustwolskaja (1919-2006), the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra preesents one of the 20th century’s most uncompromising composers after the interval. Ms Ustwolskaja gained a reputation for her visionary and always highly unusual combinations of instruments: »Dies irae« is scored for eight double basses, piano and a large, resonant wooden block, which the percussionist beats with enigmatic hammer blows. Performances of the work produce the picture, precisely calculated by the composer, of an archaic ritual that evokes a set of metaphors between death, protest and apotheosis: this is a »breakthrough piece«, a musical onslaught on all conventional boundaries, and indisputably Ustwolskaja’s most famous work. The evening opens with Edgar Varèse’s virtuoso piece »Intégrales« for wind instruments and percussion, one of the founding documents of 20th century music. Written for the avant-garde »International Composers’ Guild«, which was founded in 1921 by Carlos Salzedo and Varèse himself, »Intégrales« was given its first performance in March 1925 in New York’s Aeolian Hall.

Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
NDR Jugendsinfonieorchester, Stefan Geiger (Conductor)
Anton Bruckner’s Seventh Symphony enjoys widespread popularity, and is one of the greatest masterpieces of classical music. It opens with a theme which ascends to radiant heights. The expansive second movement delights with the special warm timbre of the Wagner tubas. Then, after a rhythmic, driving scherzo, the work ends in high spirits, in an almost boisterous mood. The NDR Jugendsinfonieorchester is made up of members of the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra Academy, students from German colleges of music and prize-winners of the youth music competition »Jugend musiziert« aged 18–25. With two projects a year, the orchestra offers gifted young musicians the opportunity to work at a professional level on representative orchestral works.

Anton Bruckner would have turned 200 years old on 4 September 2024 – an occasion for the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra to focus on important works by the great composer and organist throughout the season. On this evening in the Elbphilharmonie Grand Hall, the audience can immerse itself in the various facets of his work and influence: Bruckner’s Seventh, perhaps his most popular symphony, meets lesser-known sacred music by the former organist of St Florian’s Abbey and Linz Cathedral.
