Liudmila Minnibaeva (violinist in the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra) and Tinatin Gambashidze perform a colourful journey through music history for the »Dance into May«. Whether it’s a quadrille, waltz, polka, mazurka or minuet – there’s plenty of room for cheerful dancing on the stage in the Rolf Liebermann Studio.

What does a gondola driver sound like, how do ghosts dance and where does the moody trout splash? The NDR Vokalensemble has rummaged through its treasure chest and invites you to »sing stories«.
Where is the waltz at home? Exactly, in Vienna. It was there that the North German composer Johannes Brahms was inspired and became an enthusiastic waltz pianist. But wouldn’t »singing waltzes« be even more beautiful, he thought. Of course, and so he composed the entertaining »Liebeslieder-Walzer«. Singing and dancing along is definitely encouraged!
»This is a waltz, a waltz, a waltz by Johannes Brahms!« is the opening line of the concert. And the concert continues with lots of music that makes it impossible to sit still for all the spinning, hide-and-seek and singing along.
The composer Johannes Brahms is on holiday at Lake Starnberg. He takes a room in an inn, hires the rickety piano so that no one else will disturb him with their tinkling, and plays a melody that he can’t get out of his head. He plays it again and again, changes it – and then he’s right in the middle of composing. And there they are: the variations on the beautiful »Chorale St Antoni« – a real catchy tune.
The composers Georg Philipp Telemann, Antonio Vivaldi and Johann Sebastian Bach were true all-rounders and geniuses. In this concert, the audience is cordially invited to discover lively, varied and colourful flute concertos by these three Baroque masters, including Bach’s world-famous Badinerie.
Ding dong – the doorbell rings! Flat by flat, we trudge up the grand staircase and try to find the family who have lost their bunch of keys in the entrance hall. The doors may all look monotonous, but the doorbell signs give us an idea: the most colourful families live behind them. Whether traditional, small combo, large gang, solo or patchwork: they all tell us stories about being together, laughing and arguing with each other and the daily improvisation as part of a large »house community« called a big band. A concert about families in all their facets and a tribute to the diversity of jazz music.
Till Eulenspiegel is a well-known prankster. In his 15-minute work, Richard Strauss has the orchestra musically narrate the tricks he likes to play. In our family concert, moderated by conductor Lorenzo Viotti, we show the sounds Strauss uses to describe the jester and his pranks. We also provide insights into the timbres of the individual instruments in the orchestra, which, alone or in harmony, bring the witty stories to life.
A wildly dancing violin and a clarinet that can laugh and cry. A lively, sauntering piano and a bass that sometimes sounds like a train pulling up. With their inimitable mix of klezmer, jazz, tango, world music and classical music, the Hamburg band Mischpoke invites young and old to experience handmade music together, to clap, sing, dance and listen. Whether small or large stages, primary or secondary school, international festivals or the Berlin Philharmonie: Mischpoke meets every audience with sincerity and a twinkle in their eye. Their energetic and highly virtuosic playing creates a collective energy that sets hearts and hips vibrating every time.
This sound journey takes listeners on a unique musical experience, combining the world of vehicles with music. In the BMW Welt, cars are creatively used as sound sources, featuring a piece for four car horns and solo trumpet, and rims as percussion. It includes a carwash massage, explores common ground between police officers and conductors, and ends by refueling a car with apple juice. A creative, humorous concert for families with children aged 5 and up.
