Mischpoke take the audience on a journey through the highs and lows of life: joy, humour, tempo and charm, as well as depth and melancholy, characterise the Mischpoke sound. The klezmer band celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2020. There have been lots of exciting programmes over the years. One constant over all that time has been the motto »klezmer high life«. The five-strong Hamburg band are masters of all the nuances of klezmer music, and they mix traditional klezmer sounds with jazz, classical and world music with great virtuosity. As a result, the »old« sounds new, and the »new« contains the wonderful melodies of old.

Mischpoke is a Hamburg klezmer band that has built up an international audience. Their music is an inimitable mix of traditional, newly arranged and self-composed instrumental pieces, in which the genres of klezmer, jazz, tango, world music and classical music are explored in the most beautiful way. Yiddish songs are heard in new arrangements and repeatedly surprise with their own song text passages that make political and social references to the present day. In their current programme, Mischpoke adhere to the power of music as a universal language that creates connections between people and cultures. With their passionate and highly virtuoso playing, the Mischpoke concerts always create this collective live energy that gets hearts and hips dancing!

NDR Family Concert

Sun, Apr 6, 2025, 15:30
NDR Bigband, Jörn Marcussen-Wulff (Composition), Jörn Marcussen-Wulff (Conductor), Eva-Maria Kösters (Concept)
Ding dong – the doorbell rings! Flat by flat, we trudge up the grand staircase and try to find the family who have lost their bunch of keys in the entrance hall. The doors may all look monotonous, but the doorbell signs give us an idea: the most colourful families live behind them. Whether traditional, small combo, large gang, solo or patchwork: they all tell us stories about being together, laughing and arguing with each other and the daily improvisation as part of a large »house community« called a big band. A concert about families in all their facets and a tribute to the diversity of jazz music.

Family Concert

Till Eulenspiegel is a well-known prankster. In his 15-minute work, Richard Strauss has the orchestra musically narrate the tricks he likes to play. In our family concert, moderated by conductor Lorenzo Viotti, we show the sounds Strauss uses to describe the jester and his pranks. We also provide insights into the timbres of the individual instruments in the orchestra, which, alone or in harmony, bring the witty stories to life.
