Mozart and Dvorák

Sat, Mar 1, 2025, 15:00
Norrköping Symphony Orchestra, Ola Rudner (Conductor), Alva Holm (Violin)
In Mozart's fifth and final violin concerto, there is a new richness in the musical language compared to the previous ones. Here, the music is majestic and powerful. The soloist is Alva Holm, who in 2022 won Sweden's premier music competition: Solistpriset, the Soloist Prize. The citation stated: "With musical conviction, technical brilliance, and total presence, Alva Holm captivates the audience from the first note."The concert opens with a newly composed work by Tebogo Monnakgotla, one of Sweden's most acclaimed composers in her generation. In connection with the world premiere of her violin concerto in 2023, with Johan Dalene and the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, Dagens Nyheter's Camilla Lundberg wrote that "her colorful and elegant orchestral sounds captivate the listener" and gave the concert the highest rating. To conclude Norrköping Symphony Orchestra's guest appearance under the baton of Ola Rudner, we hear Dvorák's life-affirming Eighth Symphony. It is nature-inspired music full of joy and exuberant energy. Swedish Ola Rudner began his career as a violinist and has been internationally active as both a violinist and conductor, notably in Austria.

Schumann Quartet plays Mozart, Beethoven and Prokofiev

Philharmonie Berlin, Chamber Music Hall (Berlin)
Schumann Quartett (String Quartet), Erik Schumann (Violin), Ken Schumann (Violin), Veit Hertenstein (Viola), Mark Schumann (Cello), Susanne Stähr (Referentin)
From a young age, the brothers Erik, Ken and Mark Schumann were deeply absorbed by the subtleties of chamber music. Then, when they were joined by violist Veit Hertenstein, the Schumann Quartet launched an international career, garnering the highest praise for their “dazzling virtuosity” (Süddeutsche Zeitung). For their debut in our series, the quartet has chosen Mozart’s galant A major Quartet and the dark First Quartet by Prokofiev, influenced by Beethoven’s quartets. These will also be represented by the Op. 127 quartet, from Beethoven’s audacious late period.

Mozart, Mozart, Mozart! Pianist and passionate chamber musician Kit Armstrong has invited an illustrious group of musical friends, such as the concertmaster of the Berlin Philharmonic Noah Bendix-Balgley and three renowned string quartets, to take part in the Elbphilharmonie Mozart Festival. On their »Expedition Mozart« they revel in the composer’s classics, but also explore rarely performed chamber music. Kit Armstrong himself is represented with two piano concertos, one of which is chamber music through and through, while the other is a large-scale symphonic work. In the Sinfonia Concertante, Noah Bendix-Balgley and Amihai Grosz vie with one another. The composer himself would certainly have appreciated a musical evening of this kind with friends! If you still haven’t had enough of the great Viennese composer after an entire evening of him, why not stay for the late-night concert to round off the evening? You can hear »Eine kleine Nachtmusik« (what else?!), framing rare chamber music gems.

Mozart, Bartók and Tchaikovsky

Thu, Nov 7, 2024, 18:00
Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, Andrej Power (Leader)
The slow third movement in the Gran Partita is among the most beautiful and poignant pieces of music Mozart ever wrote. In Milos Forman's film Amadeus, the music is used in a key scene: when Salieri describes the music and realizes that Mozart is a genius. The masterpiece Gran Partita consists of seven movements that alternate between dance-like joy and contemplation. The music is composed for 12 wind instruments and double bass, and is performed by members of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra. The other two works in the programme are performed by the orchestra's strings. Divertimento is Italian and means entertainment, diversion. And Béla Bartók's Divertimento for Strings certainly lives up to its name. The music occasionally blossoms into melodic pirouettes, and the lively rhythms are inspired by Bartók's interest in folk music.Mozart was one of Tchaikovsky's great influences, which is understandable when you hear his Serenade. Like in Gran Partita, the music is passionate and sometimes melancholic, but above all overflowing with happiness. Music straight from the heart, as Tchaikovsky himself emphasized. Concertmaster Andrej Power leads the strings of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra.
