Meister & Müller

Fri, Jun 27, 2025, 20:00
Philharmonie Berlin, Main Auditorium (Berlin)
Cornelius Meister (Conductor), Hanna-Elisabeth Müller (Soprano), Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin
»No original feeling … nothing but technical skill, calculation and inner deceit, a sickly, ill-tasting Supermusic«, an outraged critic wrote of the premiere of Mahler’s Fourth in Munich in 1901. Today we speak of a masterpiece. One can love or hate Mahler’s symphonies: some suffer vicariously with them, understanding their loneliness and loving their melancholy. Others find them outré, self-indulgent, hysterical. In the Fourth, it’s all not so bad. »We revel in heavenly pleasures«, it says at the end.

Soprano Jeanine De Bique from Trinidad and Concerto Köln bring heroic female figures to life in arias and orchestral works in the Great Hall. The basis is the singer's debut album 'Mirrors', which “from furor to goosebumps, from breathtaking coloraturas to sensual, beautiful, simple melodies” revels in the entire range of baroque opera emotions.

Daniel Harding conducts the Europakonzert in Georgia

Wed, May 1, 2024, 13:00
Berliner Philharmoniker (Orchestra), Daniel Harding (Conductor), Lisa Batiashvili (Violin)
“This concert will be the highlight of my life,” says Lisa Batiashvili. In the picturesque setting of the Tsinandali estate, our Artist in Residence performs Brahms’ Violin Concerto under the baton of Daniel Harding. The Berliner Philharmoniker’s concert is something very special, and not just for the Georgian-born artist: this is the first time that a top European orchestra has performed in Georgia, a candidate for EU membership. At the same time, this performance aims to initiate closer co-operation between the country’s rich classical music scene and leading orchestras and cultural institutions in Europe. Last but not least, it is a strong sign of solidarity with the country in the context of the Ukraine conflict.

Europakonzert Riccardo Muti and the Berliner Philharmoniker in Bari

Thu, May 1, 2025, 11:00
Berliner Philharmoniker (Orchestra), Riccardo Muti (Conductor)
With its brick-red façade, a gleaming white entrance area and a magnificent red and gold auditorium, the venue for this year’s European Concert, Bari’s Teatro Petruzzelli, is an architectural jewel. Under the direction of Riccardo Muti, the Berliner Philharmoniker will present a mixed programme of Italian and German music. Rossini’s rousing William Tell Overture and the atmospheric ballet music from Verdi’s opera The Sicilian Vespers exude Italianità. Completing the programme, the dusky mixture of yearning and consolation in Brahms’ Second Symphony make the work a seminal example of late German Romanticism.
