Bass singers are less common in the world lied singing, but an exception is the Austrian Günther Groissböck, who opens this season's popular lied concert series. Today, he is one of the leading basses in the opera world and a sought-after guest at all the major opera houses, including the Vienna State Opera, La Scala, the Metropolitan Opera, and the Bayreuth Festival. He has particularly excelled in operas by Richard Strauss and Richard Wagner.Concurrently, lied singing has always been a great passion. The album Nicht Wiedersehen! from 2022 includes songs by Gustav Mahler, Richard Strauss, and Hans Rott. Mahler returns here in his programme, alongside songs by Schubert, Strauss, and Carl Loewe.Magnus Svensson is the artistic director of Konserthuset’s Lied concerts. In addition to concerts in the Nordic region and elsewhere in Europe, he has also performed in Russia and the US. The highly acclaimed English mezzo-soprano Sarah Connolly has held the title of Dame Sarah since 2017. Her opera career has been long and successful, spanning from the Baroque to contemporary repertoire. Among the many celebrated productions she has been involved in are Mozart's Titus at the English National Opera, Purcell's Dido and Aeneas at La Scala in Milan, and Richard Strauss's Ariadne auf Naxos at the Metropolitan Opera in New York.Alongside her opera career worldwide, art song has always been a central part of her artistry. Here we hear her in songs that truly showcase her versatility, by composers including Robert Schumann, Gustav Mahler, Barber, Eisler, and Britten.Magnus Svensson is the artistic director of the lied concert series. Alongside concert activities in the Nordic countries and the rest of Europe, he has also performed in Russia and the USA. Since 2012, he has also worked at the Royal Swedish Academy of Music on the re-publishing of older Swedish music.

The Swedish soprano Johanna Wallroth has a flourishing international opera career and has performed several roles at the Vienna State Opera. She had her breakthrough in 2019 when she won the prestigious Mirjam Helin International Singing Competition. Wallroth has appeared with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra on several occasions, and she also made a guest appearance at a romantic concert in 2020.This time, we begin by hearing her perform songs by Clara and Robert Schumann. After the intermission, we are treated to an exciting new discovery: songs by the French mezzo-soprano, pianist, and composer Pauline Viardot (1821–1910). Viardot was extraordinarily multi-talented; alongside her operatic career, she took piano lessons from a young Franz Liszt and frequently played four-hand piano pieces with her dear friend Frédéric Chopin. Additionally, we hear songs by the Swedish composers Gunnar de Frumerie and Tebogo Monnakgotla. Monnakgotla has set Edith Södergran’s Dagen svalnar to music (world premiere). Magnus Svensson is the artistic director of Konserthuset’s Lied concerts. In addition to concerts in the Nordic region and elsewhere in Europe, he has also performed in Russia and the US. Since 2012, he has also worked at the Royal Swedish Academy of Music with re-publishing older Swedish music.

At the season's final lied concert, two singers perform: soprano Miah Persson and baritone Arvid Eriksson. The program combines classical German lieder with Swedish songs.Miah Persson is a renowned performer at the world's leading opera houses and is also very active in concert settings. She has appeared with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra on numerous occasions and has also presented several romance concerts before, most recently in 2021 featuring songs by Stenhammar.The young Swedish baritone Arvid Eriksson has had mentors such as Anne Sofie von Otter and Peter Mattei. Among well-known song cycles he has performed are Robert Schumann's Dichterliebe and Mahler's Rückert-Lieder, but closest to his heart is Swedish songs and composers like Stenhammar, Rangström, and Peterson-Berger.Magnus Svensson is the artistic director of Konserthuset’s Lied concerts. Helena Munktell’s romantic Suite for large orchestra is a piece that the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra has never before performed in its entirety. The music was composed in 1895, and like the now often performed Bränningar, this suite was premiered in Monte Carlo in the late 19th century.Next, we hear the young Swedish soprano Jessica Elevant tackle Wagner's Wesendonck Songs – music filled with burning longing and celestial beauty. Jessica Elevant has recently gained attention for her participation in Daniel Nelson's opera Pride and Prejudice at the Norrlandsoperan. This marks her debut with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra.Another debutant is Sergej Bolkhovets – as a conductor, that is. He has previously been a violin soloist with the orchestra. He leads the orchestra in Shostakovich's first symphony. Already in this symphony, Shostakovich demonstrates his phenomenal ability to handle the orchestra. It's personal music with humorous twists and great finesse. A remarkable symphonic debut by a 19-year-old composer.

This all-Strauss programme spans the composer’s entire life, from the intoxicating vitality of Don Juan, composed at the age of 24, to the melancholy retrospection and farewell that he transmuted into beauty in the Four Last Songs in 1948, a year before his death. The third piece on the programme, Thus Spake Zarathustra, is perhaps the most ambitious of Strauss’s tone-poems: the clash of two disparate tonalities (C major and B major) and the juxtaposition of rigorous musical forms and philosophically-tinged intertitles lend a spellbinding force to this Nietzschean homage. Even without specific references to the historical Zarathustra, Nietzsche and Strauss did much to make Zoroastrianism better known in Europe.

A milestone in the 19th-century symphonic repertoire: even Robert Schumann waxed ecstatic at the “heavenly lengths” of Schubert’s Great C-major Symphony. Schubert’s path-breaking achievement was to compose, only one year after Beethoven’s Ninth, a similarly ambitious work that nonetheless struck out on paths all its own. Mozart’s virtuoso motet Exsultate, jubilate, sung by the Russian coloratura soprano Julia Lezheva, provides stunning opening to our annual benefit concert, held for the Süddeutsche Zeitung’s Advent Calendar. The programme will open with two of the Four Psalms for a cappella chorus by the Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg. Herbert Blomstedt, a Swedish conductor highly esteemed by the Munich public, will lend these pieces a delightful Scandinavian tinge.
