Kirill Petrenko conducts the Karajan Academy

Kirill Petrenko feels a special bond with the Karajan Academy’s new generation of orchestral musicians. Now the Berliner Philharmoniker’s chief conductor will be conducting the ensemble in Felix Mendelssohn’s “Italian” Symphony, a work filled with sunshine, clarity and energy. Chamber music precedes it on the programme: Mendelssohn’s miraculous Octet for strings and the sumptuous Quintet that Jörg Widmann – the current season’s Composer in Residence – composed for the Karajan Academy in 2006 when he won the Claudio Abbado Prize.

This also applies to the Fifth Symphony, which Bruckner called his “contrapuntal masterpiece” because of its ingenious compositional technique. Kirill Petrenko combines it with a work that also has a connection to sacred architecture: Wolfgang Rihm’s IN-SCHRIFT, whose dark, powerfully-sculpted sounds are inspired by St Mark’s Basilica in Venice.

Ivan Repušić, chief conductor of the Munich Radio Orchestra, is celebrated for his emotional, gripping style. This season, he directs the Karajan Academy for the first time, presenting a varied programme with the young musicians. An early classical symphony by JS Bach’s son Johann Christian meets the Notturno by the young Arnold Schönberg, a work still very much in the late Romantic tradition. Pierre Boulez mourns the death of Igor Stravinsky in his Mémoriale, while Friedrich Gulda’s Cello Concerto and Darius Milhaud's Le Boeuf sur le toit are full of musical humour.

23-year-old Aurel Dawidiuk is a genuine multi-talent: an organist, a pianist and a conductor. He’s been awarded a variety of musical prizes and in 2022 won the German Music Competition in the organ category. For his debut at the Berlin Philharmonie he has invited musical friends from the Karajan Academy. The highlight of their programme will be a performance of Paul Hindemith’s Kammermusik No. 7, whose festive radiance and grandiose finale make it one of the composer’s most brilliant works.

Exiled from his native Vienna, Korngold brought his lush late romantic harmonic language to Hollywood; in this piece, his film music can be heard again and again. Sergei Rachmaninov’s mystical tone poem The Isle of the Dead takes us into yet another hypnotic sound world.

Almost everyone knows the festive Wedding March from Mendelssohn’s music to A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Schubert’s lilting entr’acte to Act III of Rosamunde. The complete incidental music to these plays, however, is unjustly neglected. Their sequences of instrumental pieces, dance, vocal and choral movements lead us into the magical worlds of sprites and knights. Marc Minkowski, directing the RIAS Kammerchor and the Karajan Academy, presents a selection of the most beautiful pieces from both works.

The Berliner Philharmoniker and Kirill Petrenko kick off the new season – just a few days before the 200th anniversary of the birth of Anton Bruckner, whose work will be the focus of the 2024 programme. The Fifth Symphony is a work with which the composer fought for public recognition. In it, he reveals himself to be a gifted musical architect, bringing together voluptuous melodies, solemn chorales and sophisticated contrapuntal structures to create a symphonic monument. Kirill Petrenko conducts Bruckner with the Berliner Philharmoniker for the first time.
