Romantic music with Zubin Mehta and Himari

Sat, Mar 22, 2025, 19:00
Philharmonie Berlin, Main Auditorium (Berlin)
Berliner Philharmoniker (Orchestra), Zubin Mehta (Conductor), Himari (Violin)
Schubert’s “Great” C major Symphony is considered by many to epitomise romanticism in orchestral music. The first call of the horns is typical of the era – evoking a sound world that is at once warm, idyllic and full of yearning. Conductor Zubin Mehta has included two further Romantic works on the programme: Carl Maria von Weber’s overture to the fairy-tale opera Oberon and Henryk Wieniawski’s Violin Concerto No. 1, with its combination of heartfelt expression and overwhelming virtuosity. Himari, who comes from Japan and is just 13 years old, makes her debut with the Berliner Philharmoniker as soloist.

Romantic soundscapes: Mahler Chamber Orchestra and Raphaël Pichon

Tue, May 27, 2025, 20:00
Philharmonie Berlin, Chamber Music Hall (Berlin)
Mahler Chamber Orchestra (Orchestra), Raphaël Pichon (Conductor)
Diverse tonal colours, intense emotions: These qualities characterise the music of the Romantic period. This concert with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra shows just how broad an expressive spectrum could be encompassed by works from this period. Franz Schubert is featured, with his lyrical and intriguing “Unfinished” Symphony and melancholy “Lacrimoso son io”; also on the programme are Mendelssohn's liltingly lively “Scottish”’ Symphony and Richard Wagner's Siegfried Idyll: a tender declaration of love to his wife Cosima. Raphaël Pichon, best-known for his refreshing approach to early music, conducts.

Romantic programme by the Korean National Symphony Orchestra

Tue, Oct 1, 2024, 20:15
The Korean National Symphony Orchestra, David Reiland (Conductor), Sumi Jo (Soprano), Jaemin Han (Cello)
It will be the first time the Korean National Symphony Orchestra will perform in Amsterdam. It will offer the Dutch audience the opportunity to come together and to celebrate National Foundation Day. In South-Korea this day is celebrated with huge fireworks displays throughout the country. In Seoul, it takes place in Yeouido Han River Park and is very popular. The orchestra will bring world famous soloists from South-Korea.Bellini's aria Casta diva is one of the three well known, and virtuoso arias that star soprano Sumi Jo will perform. The long flowing lines of the melody require incredible control and expressive nuance. Tonight's instrumental repertoire also includes brilliant melodies, as in the Overture to Mozart's Zauberflöte and in Tchaikovsky's Rococo Variations for cello and orchestra, performed by the eighteen-year-old cello virtuoso Jaemin Han. Schumann's Fourth Symphony has a dramatic structure, in which melody lines keep returning, but played by different instruments. Slowly, a story unfolds. The opening movement sets a dramatic tone with its dark and brooding themes, while the following movements explore a range of emotions, from the lyrical Romanza to the spirited and energetic Scherzo. Conductor David Reiland is an expert in this field, as he serves as the Schumann Guest of the Düsseldorf Symphony Orchestra.

Beethoven / Sibelius / Bartók / Romantic emotions

Wed, Dec 18, 2024, 19:30
Lorenz Karls (Violin), Michał Francuz (Piano), Miłosz Korpol (Compere)
Lorenz Karls, 2nd Prize winner at the 6th Karol Lipiński International Violin Competition in Toruń, will perform at NOSPR!The opening piece of his recital, the Violin Sonata No. 7 in C minor, belongs to Op. 30, representing a transitional period in Ludwig van Beethoven’s work. This is where the classical calm meets the romantic emotionality. It is also where the changeability of moods, so characteristic for the Viennese classic, appears, already revealing elements of a new musical language. The middle part of the evening will be filled with violin and piano miniatures, which are going to present various faces of Romanticism. The lyrical tone will be provided by the subtle and poetical 1907 Aubade by Rued Langgaard. A slightly different mood will be introduced by Jean Sibelius’ miniatures: the bouncy and jocular Humoresque with its folk elements and the Novelette, full of fervent expression. The concert will be crowned with two virtuosic compositions inspired by folk music. First, we are going to hear the 1928 Rhapsody No. 1 for violin and piano by Béla Bartók. Both in its character and structure, i.e. two movements: a slow one (Lassú) and a fast one (Friss), the piece draws inspiration from the verbunkos – a Hungarian national dance. In the finale of the evening, the violinist will perform a virtuosic solo piece based on a popular Irish folk song. It will appear in the form of variations on The Last Rose of Summer byHeinrich Wilhelm Ernst, created in 1864 as the last one in a cycle of six polyphonic etudes. The repertoire will, indubitably, enable the young Swedish violinist Lorenz Karls to present his exceptional talent in its entirety. The laureate will be accompanied by the excellent pianist Michał Francuz, who has been partnering violinists for years and has earned wide recognition, also with young competition participants.Julia BroniowskaConcert duration: approximately 80 minutes
