Brahms is known for being serious, but his Symphony No. 2 sounds relaxed and natural. However, he found its melancholy unbearable. This deceptive idyll, typical of Brahms, always hints at doubt and mystery. In contrast, Grieg's Piano Concerto in A minor is a purely romantic soundscape of his Norwegian homeland, with a touch of bearable melancholy. Even the coolest Northerner knows how to melt hearts.

Bugge Wesseltoft is a brilliant researcher. In his lab, he mixes and stirs jazz, folk, and electronics. He once started alongside Jan Garbarek and became an important representative of so-called NuJazz with his own label. Izabella Effenberg is a multi-award-winning percussionist and runs her own festival, »Vibraphonissimo«, in Nuremberg. For their NDR concerts, the two join forces again for a special evening full of spontaneous improvisations. The programme includes lyrical and experimental pieces, as well as jazz classics – all pure, handmade, and without effects. In March 2024, Andreas Schaerer from Hildegard Lernt Fliegen received the »Prix du Musicien européen« from the French Académie du Jazz. A great honour for the singer born in 1976 in Emmental, Switzerland, who – by his own admission – has not closed his mouth since his first cry. A unique, charismatic vocal acrobat, he can growl, whisper, click, and beatbox as artfully as no one else. Of all his captivating projects, Schaerer’s sextet is perhaps the most unpredictable.

The University of Bonn Jazz Choir and Vocal Journey from the Cologne University of Music and Dance take the audience on a journey through fascinating soundscapes. With powerful and sensitive vocal sounds, thrilling and casual grooves, the choirs sing harmoniously diverse pop and jazz arrangements as well as original compositions, both a-cappella and with a band. Everyone is invited to be inspired by the musical passion of the young singers.

Romantic soundscapes: Mahler Chamber Orchestra and Raphaël Pichon

Diverse tonal colours, intense emotions: These qualities characterise the music of the Romantic period. This concert with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra shows just how broad an expressive spectrum could be encompassed by works from this period. Franz Schubert is featured, with his lyrical and intriguing “Unfinished” Symphony and melancholy “Lacrimoso son io”; also on the programme are Mendelssohn's liltingly lively “Scottish”’ Symphony and Richard Wagner's Siegfried Idyll: a tender declaration of love to his wife Cosima. Raphaël Pichon, best-known for his refreshing approach to early music, conducts.

Jazz at Berlin Philharmonic “Italian night” with Stefano Bollani

When Stefano Bollani interprets the hit song “O sole mio”, all languor and indulgence disappears. Instead, you hear light-footed, astonishing imagination. Now the pianist, who is at home in both jazz and classical music, celebrates the music of his homeland for an entire Italian night. There will be well-known melodies, virtuosic improvisation, and imaginative arrangements with plenty of humour. Stefano Bollani is joined by clarinettist Gabriele Mirabassi, guitarist Matteo Mancuso, trumpeter Luca Aquino and singer Valentina Cenni.

The coolest, most swinging, absolute best jazz songs from the past and in brand new arrangements, composed by and for the band. Some of these hits will resemble the originals – but Fly Me to the Moon may be presented as a ballad, and Summertime might be played as a lightning-fast bebop tune. So don’t count on things being just what you would expect, because that isn’t going to happen.Jazz hits form the foundation of this concert, but there are several not-to-be-missed songs that should have been hits themselves. Some of them will also be included in the programme.It will be swinging, beautiful and grotesque, and dig deep in the mire of the blues; it will sometimes be sweet and cute – and sometimes dark and dreary. Blue House Jazz – Cécile McLorin Salvant

Singer, composer, and visual artist – the versatile Cécile McLorin Salvant has carved out her own niche that expands jazz beyond its conventional boundaries: in addition to jazz, she touches upon vaudeville, blues, folk, and baroque music.It's an original and irresistible mix where the common denominator is the theatrical and powerful storytelling through text and music. She has been awarded numerous prizes and won several Grammy Awards. Her latest album was Mélusine (2023), where the Florida-born artist predominantly sings in French. Another example of her creativity is Ogresse – a 90-minute song cycle with her own lyrics, which she first performed in 2018 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.Cécile McLorin Salvant has appeared at Konserthuset Stockholm several times since her debut in 2017. With her, she this time brings an experienced trio featuring pianist Sullivan Fortner, who also contributed to Salvant's Grammy-winning album The Window, bassist Yasushi Nakamura, known for his exquisite yet swinging bass playing, and on drums, Kyle Poole, who has made a splash on New York's jazz scene in recent years.In cooperation with Stockholm Jazz Festival.

His music is deeply rooted in Kurdish culture with inspiration from classical nineteenth-century poetry, incorporating themes of love, philosophy and hardships faced by the Kurdish people.With a deeply personal style, Karim combines traditional melodies with modern elements, creating a unique and authentic musical experience. By singing in different Kurdish dialects, he aims to build a musical bridge to bring together the divided Kurdish people.Joining him on stage is the Hezaravaz Band, which has roots in Kurdish and Persian music and combines traditional instruments such as the tar, daf and santur with modern features. Together with Adnan Karim, they create a beautiful and deeply moving fusion of Kurdish and Persian music.
