Gershwin

A program in the spirit of the great American whose music always exudes a unique casualness. Featuring the hr-Bigband and the hr-Symphony Orchestra, two sound worlds united for Gershwin and a world premiere by Thierry Escaich. Gershwin's music, always on the pulse of turbulent times, is exemplified by his "Rhapsody in Blue." The chief conductor himself takes to the piano keys, adding to the coolness. Concert duration: approx. 120 minutes including intermission.

The orchestra, which was founded by graduates of the tradition-steeped Frankfurt University of Music, is currently one of the most exciting professional orchestras in Germany: an international and high-class ensemble with a broad repertoire that knows how to inspire its audience.

A musical trip to America at the year's end featuring composers Leonard Bernstein and George Gershwin, whose works blend new Western and jazz sounds with European classical traditions. Between Bernstein's "Divertimento" and Gershwin's "Porgy and Bess", hear one of America's strongest female voices: composer Jessie Montgomery (born 1981). Her "Freedom Songs" were written for soprano Julia Bullock and arrange traditional African-American music.

This youth concert spotlights George Gershwin's energetic, jazzy music, led by the charismatic conductor and pianist Wayne Marshall. Young poetry slammers add exciting contrast with powerful performances.

Top musicians from the Netherlands and around the world bring you all your favourite classical pieces, as well as tributes to Leonard Cohen and The Beatles, and all your favourite film music.We also present a host of young talent in our summer concerts, including youth orchestras from South Africa and Turkey, and top young classical soloists. After many of the concerts, we offer a meet-and-greet with the artists in an informal setting, or an afterparty with DJ in the Entrance Hall. In one of the world’s finest concert halls, there’s something for everyone this summer at The Concertgebouw!
