The Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra presents a Baroque wind instrument program in Bad Hersfeld this season. It takes some confidence to dedicate a sacred work personally to the Pope. But Claudio Monteverdi was keen to reach as large an audience as possible when he published his »Vespro della Beata Vergine« in 1610. With the work, he sought to express all the facets of his compositional prowess, and the »Vespers for the Blessed Virgin« remains one of the greatest works of sacred music to this day. In 13 movements, Monteverdi demonstrates his mastery and his ability to integrate all the contrasting stylistic influences of his time into one diverse whole. The six-strong Flemish instrumental ensemble Les Cornets Noirs specialises in the music of Monteverdi’s time. Together with the singers of the Delectus Cantionum ensemble, they present a historically informed and musically expressive performance of this legendary work.

In his twelve famous Concerti grossi, Arcangelo Corelli translated the coexistence and interweaving of single parts and the whole into Baroque orchestral music that was to become highly influential. Ilya Gringolts counters this with capricious poses on the solo violin, celebrating the birth of virtuosity. Ensemble pieces encounter islands of calculated walks along the dividing line between the collective and the individual. Arcangelo Corelli marked the pinnacle of the Baroque concerto grosso. His instrumental music travelled beyond Italy to influence composers all over Europe, in both his own and succeeding generations. If we listen to the dialogue structure of Corelli’s Concerti grossi, where a group of soloists is juxtaposed with the supporting sound of the whole orchestra, it is clear why the Baroque is referred to as the era of the concertante style. However, this was soon to become a thing of the past in the 18th century, as the soloist moved more and more into the limelight. The individual began to outstrip the collective. Capricious – a word denoting something or someone whimsical, unconventional, even bizarre… The Caprices for Solo Violin written by Pietro Locatelli, Giuseppe Tartini, Niccolò Paganini and Salvatore Sciarrino are dominated by virtuoso elements that express the soloist’s individuality.

The award-winning Berlin Chamber Soloists invite you to the Laeiszhalle Hamburg for a festive Christmas concert. They will perform selected Christmas pieces from European classical music from the Baroque to the Romantic period. The chamber orchestra »Kammersolisten Berlin« was founded in April 2015. The members of this ensemble have known each other for many years and have performed together in a wide variety of formations around the world. Individually, each member is either an outstanding soloist, chamber musician or orchestral musician from one of Berlin’s various major orchestras (Konzerthaus Berlin, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin, etc.). The friends and musicians play freely, drive each other to peak performances and thus arouse enthusiasm and emotions in the audience. The international line-up provides an unrivalled diversity of ideas, with a repertoire that includes works from the baroque, classical, romantic and modern eras.

Two wind players and a percussionist from the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, together with a guesting wind player and percussionist, present music ranging from Monteverdi to Joakim Agnas, who is the orchestra's principal trumpeter and also a composer.In between, there’s a wide variety of pieces, including Swedish Lisa Streich’s Apelsin (Streich was the focus of Konserthuset’s Composer Weekend Festival this spring), a trio by Poulenc, as well as a special arrangement of Mozart’s famous variations on Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star. A great American composers also feature: the inventive Charles Ives, with From the Steeples and the Mountains.In addition to Joakim Agnas, the concert features Karl Frisendahl, principal trombonist, the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra's timpanist Anders Haag, and guest trumpeter Jonas Lindeborg and percussionist Ulf Ewasson Liliansdotter.***Menu: Creamy tomato soup with basil.
