Musicologist Martin Geck praised Mozart's string quintets, noting how a second viola opens a new world of chamber music. Mozart's first quintet, KV 174, was composed in Salzburg in 1773, crowning his early chamber music creations. His C-major Quintet KV 515, written 14 years later, is his longest four-movement instrumental piece. It's a bright work that reflects “Figaro” and anticipates the “Jupiter” Symphony. A pre-concert talk with Marcus Imbsweiler takes place at 2:30 pm in the Old University Auditorium.

In April 1788, Mozart advertised three new quintets in the Wiener Zeitung. Among them was the wind serenade KV 388, adapted for string quintet, alongside KV 515 and KV 516. This work, KV 388, is not a light-hearted piece, but a serious "Nachtmusique". The G minor quintet also carries intense emotions and tension. However, it concludes with a lively final rondo. A pre-concert talk will be given by Marcus Imbsweiler.

Mozart's String Quintet in D major, K. 593, premiered in December 1790 at a chamber music evening in Mozart's Vienna apartment, attended by Joseph Haydn, who embarked on his first London journey the next day. It was to be the last encounter between the two friends, as Mozart had only one year to live. The two late string quintets—K. 614 was written in April 1791 as his last completed chamber music work for strings—also form a kind of farewell with Haydn allusions and melancholic touches. At the same time, however, they contain playful music that, with its harmonic and melodic richness, contrasts, and profoundness, points to the future.

Over three consecutive days, Igor Levit performs all five of Sergei Prokofiev's brilliant piano concertos, spanning the young composer's boundless creativity to his mature mastery. He's accompanied by the Budapest Festival Orchestra, conducted by Iván Fischer. Prokofiev's first concerto features rhythmic agility and sharp percussion. Alongside this and the fifth concerto, they perform the "Symphony of the Greatness of the Human Spirit", whose 1945 premiere coincided with the Red Army's victory announcement. Levit also revisits Prokofiev's second concerto after a decade. A pre-concert talk with Levit and Anselm Cybinski takes place at 7 pm.

Chiaroscuro Quartet (Streichquartett)

String quartets on historical instruments? Few ensembles take this risk, and even fewer are successful with it over time. Founded in London in 2005, the quartet around the renowned violinist Alina Ibragimova, which limits itself to a repertoire up to the early Romantic period, is almost without competition. The eponymous term "Chiaroscuro" - for the dramatic chiaroscuro effects of late Renaissance Italian painting - basically falls short: It is the wealth of graphic details that distinguishes the group's extremely faithful interpretations. Beethoven's kaleidoscope of strongly contrasting short movements is the ideal demonstration object for the finely nuanced sound of this exceptional quartet.

The Marc Ribot Trio celebrated a premiere in a new line-up at the famous NYC Winter Jazzfest in 2024 – now they come with James Brandon Lewis on saxophone as support to Hamburg for the »Reflektor« Festival dedicated to Ribot. The musicians first played together in 2005 on the album »Spiritual Unity«, a homage to the legendary free jazz saxophonist Albert Ayler. Alongside Marc Ribot and drummer Chad Taylor as consistent members of the trio, at that time Henry Grimes still played on bass. He worked with Cecil Tayler, Don Cherry and Albert Ayler, amongst others, in the 1960s. In the current line-up, Hilliard Greene replaces Henry Grimes, who passed away in 2020, on double bass. With James Brandon Lewis, whose Gospel-influenced sound on tenor saxophone seamlessly blends into the eruptive sound of the band, the trio becomes a quartet. James Brandon Lewis, as bandleader of the Red Lily Quartet, also takes centre stage in the second set of the evening. The programme »For Mahalia, with Love« is a tribute to the Gospel legend Mahalia Jackson, who made famous traditional songs, such as »Swing Low«, »Sparrow« and »Wade in the Water«. Lewis has a personal, emotional connection to the work of Mahalia Jackson: his grandmother had introduced the music to him when he was just a child. So, he also describes his arrangements as a »Three-way conversation between Mahalia, my grandmother and me.«

For their debut in our series, the quartet has chosen Mozart’s galant A major Quartet and the dark First Quartet by Prokofiev, influenced by Beethoven’s quartets. After winning several international competitions, including the Carl Nielsen Competition in Copenhagen and the Joseph Haydn Chamber Music Competition in Vienna, the young ensemble is one of the rising stars of the quartet scene. For their debut in our quartet series, the four musicians will perform classics of the genre such as Mozart's “Hunting Quartet” and Grieg's Opus 27, as well as Wynton Marsalis’ jazzy Creole Contradanzas and American composer Rebecca Clarke’s thought-provoking Poem.
