Haydn-Orchester Hamburg

Sat, Apr 26, 2025, 20:00
Laeiszhalle, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
Haydn-Orchester, Rida Murtada (Conductor)
Playing good music at a high level – that is the goal that the Haydn Orchestra Hamburg has set itself. And it is not without pride that it is one of the leading non-professional orchestras in northern Germany. The Haydn Orchestra Hamburg was founded in 1977 as a chamber orchestra. In the early years, the name was the programme: Joseph Haydn, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Georg Friedrich Händel and Johann Sebastian Bach were the composers of the orchestra’s early phase. Today, the orchestra consists of 90 musicians with a full woodwind and brass section. It is therefore only natural that the great symphonies and concertos of the 19th and early 20th centuries, such as the works of Johannes Brahms, Ludwig van Beethoven and George Gershwin, are now increasingly played.

Mathias Weber / Piano Recital

Sun, Sep 15, 2024, 19:30
Elbphilharmonie, Kleiner Saal (Hamburg)
Mathias Weber (Piano)
The phenomenon of movement is one of the basic elements of music. This manifests itself in a wide variety of forms. An essential manifestation is dance and thus rhythm. There are changing relationships between this and the other basic musical elements, of which melody and harmony are representative. From this field of tension, a multitude of the greatest musical works of art could be created. The horizon extends from the miniature of a mazurka to the large-scale form of the Baroque, the suite, from the carnival swing to the melancholy waltz to the effervescent joie de vivre of a tarantella.

Mathias Weber / Maxim Kosinov

Sat, Feb 15, 2025, 19:30
Elbphilharmonie, Kleiner Saal (Hamburg)
Maxim Kosinov (Violin), Mathias Weber (Piano)
Three great works of chamber music that refer to the same basic note »A«. But what different worlds they come from in terms of character and form: Schumann’s Sonata in A minor, Franck’s in A major and Beethoven’s monumental Opus 47 – the »Kreutzer Sonata« in A minor and A major. The sensational duo of internationally acclaimed artists, Russian violinist Maxim Kosinov and Hamburg Érard pianist Mathias Weber, captivates with its spirited, gripping, sensual and sensitive playing, in which both voices display equal flights of virtuosity as well as delicately merging magical passages. The Érard concert grand piano by César Franck from 1863, on which a breathtaking clarity and transparency of sound can be produced thanks to its parallel sides, lends the interpretation of these magnificent works a historical dimension.

Haydn and Dvorák

Thu, Oct 10, 2024, 19:00
Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, Ruth Reinhardt (Conductor), Julian Steckel (Cello)
Due to illness, cellist Amalie Stalheim has been forced to cancel. This also results in a programme change for tonight's concert. Instead of Grażyna Bacewicz’s First Cello Concerto, we will hear the German cellist Julian Steckel perform Haydn’s First Cello Concerto. The seas, lakes, streams, and rivers have always been important sources of inspiration for artists, poets, and composers. In Smetana's famous Moldau, celebrating its 200th anniversary, we hear how the bubbling smaller streams meander through the landscape before merging into the mighty river. The melody comes from an old folk song that we recognize as Ack Värmeland, du sköna. Perhaps Smetana heard the melody when he was working as a conductor in Gothenburg in the 1850s?Like Smetana, Antonín Dvorák was from Czechia. In both their music, Czech culture and nature are important ingredients. Dvorák had great international success during his lifetime and was appointed, for example, as a composition professor in New York. His Symphony No. 9, "From the New World", is the most famous, but many consider his seventh symphony to be one of his very best works.Julian Steckel steps in at the last minute as the soloist in a true classic: Joseph Haydn’s Cello Concerto No. 1 in C Major – a masterpiece that disappeared and was rediscovered almost 200 years later, in the mid-20th century (incidentally, in Prague, which adds a Czech connection to the programme). The renowned German cellist Julian Steckel is admired for his emotional depth and communication with audiences. His career took off after winning the ARD Music Competition in 2010, and since then, he has performed with many of the world's leading orchestras. The Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra is led by German conductor Ruth Reinhardt – currently involved in the Royal Swedish Opera's production of Verdi's La traviata in spring 2024. She made her debut with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra at a summer concert in 2018.
