The première of Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring, by Serge Diaghilev’s Ballets russes in 1913, proved to be one of the greatest scandals in music history. This barbaric ritual of a heathen sacrifice to spring, the pounding steps and twitching movements of the dancers, and the radically modern score left the audience bewildered and outraged. Two weeks after this expressionistic explosion Diaghilev and his company mounted Debussy’s Jeux, a “poème dansé” with which the French master pointed his impressionist tone-colours in the direction of modernism. François-Xavier Roth places his BRSO concert entirely beneath the banner of the early 20th-century avant-garde by joining these two forward-looking ballet scores with Arnold Schoenberg’s Piano Concerto, a late masterpiece in his revolutionary 12-note idiom, played by pianist Kirill Gerstein.

Following his successful début with the BRSO last year, François-Xavier Roth has again been invited to Munich to conduct two concerts outside the regular season. The concerts will begin and end with towering masterpieces from Mozart’s symphonic output: the majestic Symphony in E flat major (K 543) and his final contribution to the genre, the radiant “Jupiter” Symphony (K 551). As a counterpoint to Mozart’s classical ideal, they will frame a mesmerizing gossamer creation by Anton Webern: his terse Concerto for Nine Instruments op. 24 (1934), a work lasting no more than a few minutes. Composed strictly according to the 12-tone method, its three movements project quite different moods, from flickering whimsy to wan pallor to a jaunty march.

Somber thoughts centering on death’s finality form the core of Iannis Xenakis’ Aïs: the wind instruments’ highly expressive sounds in the very first bars decidedly establish the overall emotional atmosphere, which subsequently materializes in Odysseus’ agonizing encounter with his deceased mother. Xenakis’ stirring ombra scene was commissioned by musica viva of the Bayerischer Rundfunk in 1980, and will now be performed once again by baritone Georg Nigl with François-Xavier Roth conducting. Additionally, Antoine Tamestit will perform the solo part in the world premiere of Francesco Filidei’s new Viola Concerto. The concert will also feature Elizabeth Ogonek, a New York-based composer whose iridescent sound frescoes have been described by the Chicago Tribune as “shimmering” and “dramatic.”

François-Xavier Roth, conductor of this performance, considers the first version from 1873 to be the most successful – because it shows the original Bruckner. Roth has made a name for himself as a Bruckner interpreter who brings not only the sonic power of this music to life, but also its nuances. The programme also includes the world premiere of a work by the Slovenian Vito Žuraj.

The Festspielhaus Baden-Baden celebrates Pierre Boulez's 100th birthday with several concerts, including two of his "younger" works paired with Bruckner's last symphony. Boulez admired Bruckner and played a key role in his recognition. The program features "Figures – Doubles – Prismes," where figures are varied and doubled, concluding with a new perspective on the earlier work. A vocal piece inspired by E. E. Cummings's poetry experiments combines text and music.
