Ensemble Musikfabrik

Date & Time
Mon, Jun 23, 2025, 20:00
French composer Pierre Boulez and American composer Elliott Carter first met in Paris in the early 1950s and formed a lifelong friendship. Ensemble Musikfabrik and Bas Wiegers commemorate these two important modern composers with iconic pieces of contemporary music. Clarinetist Carl Rosman takes center stage in Boulez's 'Domaines', exploring space in dialogue with five instrumentalists. Carter's 'Double Concerto' features a musical conversation between two chamber orchestras, with soloists Benjamin Kobler (harpsichord) and Pierre-Laurent Aimard (piano).

Sonja Lena Schmid (Cello), Leopold Hurt (Zither), Andrej Koroliov (Piano), Andrej Koroliov (Keyboard), Jonathan Shapiro (Drums), Giovanni Dinello (Sound design)
The Decoder Ensemble always moves with the times – or is a bit ahead of it. As a »Band for New Music«, the six musicians are regular guests at the Elbphilharmonie with a wide variety of projects. »Future Recognition« explores the possibilities of artificial intelligence in music and art as part of the Hamburg International Music Festival, which takes place in 2025 under the theme of the »Future«. All works on this evening experiment with AI and are for the most part premieres by international young composers for whom working with AI is almost second nature. Creative potential or risk to people and their identity? Alexander Schubert is both ensemble member and composer. With his piece »Holo_Acid.MOV (CRYPT-File)«, he raises further key questions: lyrics, sounds and videos in this multimedia work are without exception AI generated. Since its premiere in 2021, production techniques have rapidly improved and streamlined – what does this short half-life mean for artistic creation? Multimedia artist Denis Polec has been commissioned to refine the visual part of this composition using AI.

Ensemble Resonanz / Abel Selaocoe / Saerom Park

Wed, Jun 11, 2025, 19:30
Elbphilharmonie, Kleiner Saal (Hamburg)
Ensemble Resonanz, Abel Selaocoe (Cello), Abel Selaocoe (Vocals), Saerom Park (Cello)
South African cellist Abel Selaocoe redefines the parameters of the cello and combines virtuoso skills with improvisation, singing and body percussion. He has found an ideal ally in Ensemble Resonanz, which also enthusiastically explores innovative and new paths in its concerts, sometimes as the Ensemble in Residence of the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg and sometimes in the chamber music club it founded itself in the Hamburg district of St Pauli. Together they move through worlds, genres and eras – until they arrive together in the future. In »Silent Woods« by Antonín Dvořák, the leaves rustle in the wind with four celli. »When We Were Trees« by Italian cellist and composer Giovanni Sollima takes us through the seasons in a true sound adventure with a mix of different styles – sometimes classical, sometimes folkloristic, sometimes percussive, sometimes meditative. Kate Moore contributes a new composition for cello and Selaocoe’s voice.

Ensemble Resonanz / Nils Mönkemeyer / William Youn / Riccardo Minasi

Tue, May 6, 2025, 20:00
Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
Ensemble Resonanz, Nils Mönkemeyer (Viola), William Youn (Piano), Riccardo Minasi (Conductor)
»This Mozart is rock ’n’ roll«, said the NDR about the recording of the last three Mozart symphonies by Ensemble Resonanz under its Principal Guest Conductor Riccardo Minasi. Symphony No. 35 »Haffner« is now on the programme with this level of energy. In addition, Nils Mönkemeyer on the viola and William Youn on the piano explore fragments from Mozart’s pen. The programme ends with Mozart’s symphony in all its elegance, preceded by his thoughts in the form of sketches and fragments, arranged by Isabel Mundry: melodies to whistle along to, a charming minuet, a presto with verve and a rapturous gesture. The casual overture by his contemporary Marianna von Martines invites us into the salon of the 18th century, while in a new chamber concerto Manfred Trojahn distils the muted sound of gardens that have become silent.
