Daniel Harding

Mon, May 22, 2023, 20:00
Daniel Harding (Conductor), Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks
Night walk with Daniel Harding: in the somber Funeral March, Gustav Mahler’s shadowy, gloomy Seventh Symphony emerges as “the psychogram of a compulsive existence” (Wolfgang Stähr). Nachtmusik I, characterized by a horn duet, casts a wistful glance into bygone times; the Scherzo acquires a restless, spooky character; and Nachtmusik II becomes a nocturnal serenade especially through the presence of a guitar and a mandolin, instruments rarely found in an orchestra. After the eerie nocturnal atmosphere of the previous movements, the work’s gigantic finale transports the listener towards the light – a change of mood that left the audience attending the work’s premiere somewhat perplexed. Today, Mahler’s Seventh is considered a masterpiece of symphonic form, as will be exemplified in Mahler specialist Daniel Harding’s performance.

Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra / Kirill Gerstein / Daniel Harding

Fri, Mar 8, 2024, 20:00
Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Kirill Gerstein (Piano), Daniel Harding (Conductor)
For health reasons, pianist María João Pires is unfortunately unable to perform in this concert. The equally renowned pianist Kirill Gerstein is stepping in for her. Together with Daniel Harding and the Swedish Chamber Orchestra, he will present Mozart's Piano Concerto in D minor, in which the orchestra and soloist will engage in a particularly exciting dialogue. The second main work on the programme is Richard Strauss’s tone poem »Also sprach Zarathustra«, which begins with one of the most famous fanfares in music and cinematic history! Tickets retain their validity and ticket buyers will be informey by e-mail. And before those two classics of the repertoire, chief conductor Harding and his radio orchestra present a rarely performed work: the folk-inspired 1904 tone poem »En skärgardssägen« (Legend of the Skerries) by the Swedish composer Hugo Alfvén. After the interval, the sun rises in Strauss’s celebration of nature and the creation – with the fanfare used by Stanley Kubrick in his classic 1968 movie »2001 – A Space Odyssey«.

Daniel Harding conducts the Europakonzert in Georgia

Wed, May 1, 2024, 13:00
Berliner Philharmoniker (Orchestra), Daniel Harding (Conductor), Lisa Batiashvili (Violin)
“This concert will be the highlight of my life,” says Lisa Batiashvili. In the picturesque setting of the Tsinandali estate, our Artist in Residence performs Brahms’ Violin Concerto under the baton of Daniel Harding. The Berliner Philharmoniker’s concert is something very special, and not just for the Georgian-born artist: this is the first time that a top European orchestra has performed in Georgia, a candidate for EU membership. At the same time, this performance aims to initiate closer co-operation between the country’s rich classical music scene and leading orchestras and cultural institutions in Europe. Last but not least, it is a strong sign of solidarity with the country in the context of the Ukraine conflict.
