In the concert »Viva Mozart!«, clarinettist Sabine Grofmeier devotes herself wholeheartedly to the great classical composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. In addition to the famous Clarinet Quintet, arias and other highlights from Mozart’s operas and concertos are on the programme – newly arranged for clarinet and string quartet.
Formed in 1996, Quatuor Diotima from France is a familiar name in the field of New Music. Because with »Fragmente – Stille, An Diotima« of 1980, Luigi Nono composed one of the epochal works of contemporary music. And because Nono also refers to Beethoven’s equally innovative, late String Quartet Op. 132 in his work, Quatuor Diotima now combines these two compositions for an evening of great string quartet music. Luigi Nono described his string quartet, which was premiered at the Bonn Beethovenfest in 1980, as »transcendental music«. Nono wove a number of quotations into the fine soundscape that oscillates between silence and non-silence, including from Verdi’s »Ave Maria«. Reference is also made to the slow, transcendentally beautiful movement »Heilige Dankgesang eines Genesenen an die Gottheit« from Beethoven’s final official String Quartet Op. 132.
Quatuor Ébène is a French string quartet.
The Barbican Quartet was founded in 2015, and is taught and supported by string quartet stars like Günter Picheler and the Quatuor Ébène. The four musicians present works by Alban Berg and Beethoven as part of the »Teatime Classics« series. 2022 was a memorable year for the Barbican Quartet: they won first prize and other special prizes at the ARD Music Competition, as well as a third prize at the Bordeaux International String Quartet Competition. The ensemble had only just found a new second violinist, and thus a new sound and style of ensemble playing, in February 2022. The Barbican Quartet has appeared at many international festivals, and has been broadcast on the radio several times. In the 2022/23 season, they produced and released their first CD. An extensive tour will take them to different parts of Europe, to Canada and the USA.
On its debut CD »Raíces«, Latin Strings presents its own musical roots with works from Chile, Brazil and Argentina. The concert at the Elbphilharmonie will also feature Dvorák’s »American« quartet, a classic of the string quartet literature.
