Kustbandet has been committed to 1920s and 30s jazz since the band’s formation by a few enthusiastic schoolmates in Årsta in the 1960s. With high spirits, energy and professionalism, they have nurtured the legacy of greats like Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington and Count Basie, and presented that legacy with pleasure to Sweden and the world. Like their role models before them, Kustbandet is musically rooted in early-twentieth-century New Orleans and the jazz and swing of Harlem – eras in which jazz was a popular, festive style of music for dance and entertainment. They’ve had numerous successes over the decades, appearing at thousands of concerts, festivals and jazz clubs. As Swedish jazz ambassadors, Kustbandet has toured 20 countries and been celebrated by the media, jazz lovers, and not least – by greats like Arne Domnérus, Benny Carter and Dizzy Gillespie. Leif “Smoke Rings” Andersson referred to Kustbandet as his special “Swingin’ Swedes”.Jazz is Fun traditionally combines new and old works with a surprise or two.

Bang on a Can All-Stars / Trio Mediaeval

Mon, Feb 17, 2025, 20:00
Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
Vicky Chow (Piano), Vicky Chow (Melodica), David Cossin (Drums), David Cossin (Percussion), Arlen Hlusko (Cello), Mark Stewart (Electric Guitar), Mark Stewart (Banjo), Mark Stewart (Mountain dulcimer), Mark Stewart (Jaw harp), Mark Stewart (Harmonica), Ken Thomson (Clarinet), Ken Thomson (Harmonica), Kebra-Seyoun Charles (Double bass), Linn Andrea Fuglseth (Soprano), Anna Maria Friman (Soprano), Jorunn Lovise Husan (Alto)
Even for the state of the art, there are legends – such as the Bang on a Can All-Stars, who are always in search of very up-to-date, exciting music, regardless of genre categories. Steve Reich, Philip Glass, Meredith Monk and Ornette Coleman are just a few of the artists who have already collaborated with the New York collective. For their Elbphilharmonie debut, the musicians have chosen a work by founding member and Pulitzer prizewinner Julia Wolfe, which traces the myth surrounding the American folk hero John Henry as an oratorio between minimal music and country. There are hundreds of versions of this story, passed down by word of mouth and already cast in music many times whether by Johnny Cash, Van Morrison or Bruce Springsteen: at the end of the 19th century, a worker is supposed to have competed against a new kind of steam-driven hammer in railway construction with his muscle strength and won – to pay with his life as a result. Julia Wolfe has composed a meta myth with »Steel Hammer«: »The work is inspired by my love of legends and the music of the Appalachian Mountains. I fragmented the many different and somewhat contradictory versions of the ballad and wove it into a completely new format. The music often circles around individual words or phrases to tell the ultimate story and its different paths.« The Appalachian dulcimer (a kind of zither) joins the usual line-up of Bang on a Can with clarinet, a lot of percussion, guitars, piano, cello and double bass and provides for the American country sound. Trio Mediæval, a top-class a-cappella ensemble from Norway, completes the overall sound with its clear soprano and alto voices, which Julia Wolfe particularly appreciates for their great wealth of experience in the vocal tradition of their homeland.

Stockholm Swing All Stars – Play the Jazz Hits

Sun, Sep 1, 2024, 19:00
Karl Olandersson (Trumpet), Karl Olandersson (Vocals), Klas Lindquist (Alto saxophone), Klas Lindquist (Clarinet), Fredrik Lindborg (Tenor Saxophone), Fredrik Lindborg (Clarinet), Fredrik Lindborg (Bass clarinet), Dicken Hedrenius (Trombone), Daniel Tilling (Piano), Göran Lind (Double bass), Mattias Puttonen (Drums)
The coolest, most swinging, absolute best jazz songs from the past and in brand new arrangements, composed by and for the band. Some of these hits will resemble the originals – but Fly Me to the Moon may be presented as a ballad, and Summertime might be played as a lightning-fast bebop tune. So don’t count on things being just what you would expect, because that isn’t going to happen.Jazz hits form the foundation of this concert, but there are several not-to-be-missed songs that should have been hits themselves. Some of them will also be included in the programme. It will be swinging, beautiful and grotesque, and dig deep in the mire of the blues; it will sometimes be sweet and cute – and sometimes dark and dreary. But most of all, it will be fun! Some of Sweden’s foremost jazz musicians are welcomed on stage!Read more about Stockholm Swing All Stars (opens in a new window)
