Christoph Sietzen & Friends

Tue, Apr 29, 2025, 20:00
Tabea Zimmermann (Viola), Mahan Esfahani (Cembalo), Christoph Sietzen (Multi percussion)

Debuting at the Salzburg Festival at 12, he inspires contemporary composers while also exploring early music, including playing the harpsichord. He combines these worlds with the Academy of Ancient Music, featuring a new piece by Giorgio Musolesi for percussion and baroque orchestra.

Our honorary conductor Christoph Eschenbach

Wed, Mar 13, 2024, 16:30
Konzerthalle Bamberg, Joseph-Keilberth-Saal (Bamberg)
Christoph Eschenbach (Conductor), Hanna-Elisabeth Müller (Soprano)
»And the soul, unguarded, wants to soar in free flights, to live within the magic circle of the night deeply and a thousandfold.« These dream-lorn lines by Hermann Hesse inspired Richard Strauss to write one of his moving »Four Last Songs«. These depict a life cycle and bear witness to his confrontation with his own death. At 83, the aged composer looked back on his triumphant life »weary of wandering«. When a journalist asked him about his next projects, Strauss answered with a wink: »Well, just die!« But his son persuaded him to compose another »major work«, saying, »Dad, stop brooding, write some beautiful songs instead.« And Strauss succeeded in a beguiling way, for the highly romantic settings hover in an inimitable atmosphere of weightlessness. With us, the voice of Hanna-Elisabeth Müller soars to these soulful songs. Christoph Eschenbach then leads us through a work by Bruckner that was first performed in 1873 and was composed as a direct expression of a deep life crisis due to the so-called »St. Anna affair«: as he was hardly noticed as a composer in Vienna at that time, he gave piano lessons at the St. Anna educational institution – and once confidentially called one of his pupils »my darling«. Even though Bruckner felt wrongly suspected, the newspapers made a scandal out of this event. He was soon rehabilitated, but wrote his second symphony in this humiliated state of mind – which therefore has a restless, pessimistic underlying mood: it fluctuates between heartfelt prayers, desperate outbursts, clueless silences and wild dance scenes.

Bach: Matthäus-Passion / Hans-Christoph Rademann

Mon, Mar 24, 2025, 20:00
Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
Gaechinger Cantorey, Matthias Winckhler (Bass), Daniel Johannsen (Tenor), Miriam Feuersinger (Soprano), Alex Potter (Alto), Tobias Berndt (Bass), Lucy De Butts (Soprano), Tobias Knaus (Alto), Christoph Pfaller (Tenor), Martin Schicketanz (Bass), Hans-Christoph Rademann (Director)
In January 2023, the audience in the Elbphilharmonie responded to the performance of Bach’s St John Passion with the Gaechinger Cantorey with minutes of cheering. »There was a lot to celebrate«, commented Marcus Stäbler for the Hamburger Abendblatt at the time, citing the »eye for the big picture«, the »dense arc of tension«, the »sense of context« and the »flair for detail« in Hans-Christoph Rademann’s interpretation. Now the long-established ensemble of the International Bach Academy Stuttgart is returning to the Elbe with the St Matthew Passion. The monumental oratorio with nine soloists, two choirs and a double orchestra immerses the audience in a deeply spiritual, moving and poetic experience. Bach’s depiction of Jesus’ last hours offers a journey through the human soul in the spirit of the Protestant tradition of the time. He masterfully brings the sacred text to life with vivid harmonies and exquisite interplay between soloists and choirs. With a hand-picked choir, a first-class baroque orchestra and outstanding soloists, Hans-Christoph Rademann presents a renewed and faithful version of this highlight of vocal music of all time.

Time and again, the orchestra gives young, very talented conductors and soloists the opportunity to gain experience with public performances in large concert halls. For the anniversary concert, the orchestra under the direction of Wolf Tobias M. Müller showcases its musical breadth with a colourful bouquet of overtures and arias from Mozart to Puccini as well as Schubert’s »Unfinished« Symphony. To celebrate the anniversiary, a new percussion concerto by Fredrik Schwenk will be premiered.

Elbphilharmonie, Kleiner Saal (Hamburg)
Ensemble Resonanz, Abel Selaocoe (Cello), Abel Selaocoe (Vocals), Saerom Park (Cello)
South African cellist Abel Selaocoe redefines the parameters of the cello and combines virtuoso skills with improvisation, singing and body percussion. He has found an ideal ally in Ensemble Resonanz, which also enthusiastically explores innovative and new paths in its concerts, sometimes as the Ensemble in Residence of the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg and sometimes in the chamber music club it founded itself in the Hamburg district of St Pauli. Together they move through worlds, genres and eras – until they arrive together in the future. In »Silent Woods« by Antonín Dvořák, the leaves rustle in the wind with four celli. »When We Were Trees« by Italian cellist and composer Giovanni Sollima takes us through the seasons in a true sound adventure with a mix of different styles – sometimes classical, sometimes folkloristic, sometimes percussive, sometimes meditative. Kate Moore contributes a new composition for cello and Selaocoe’s voice.

Carl-Philipp-Emanuel-Bach-Chor / Dresdner Festspielorchester / Hansjörg Albrecht

Tue, Mar 12, 2024, 19:30
Laeiszhalle, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
Dresdner Festspielorchester, Carl-Philipp-Emanuel-Bach-Chor Hamburg, Julia Sophie Wagner (Soprano), Bettina Ranch (Alto), Daniel Johannsen (Evangelist), Andreas Post (Tenor), Matthias Winckhler (Bass-Bariton), Klaus Mertens (Bass), Hansjörg Albrecht (Director)
Bach, Bach, Bach ... Johann Sebastian Bach was a master of pastiche: he loved to reuse his own compositions in new contexts and to copy his pieces in order to demonstrate their flexibility and universality and to give them new expression. With the Lukas-Passion, we hear a work in precisely this pastiche manner. Bach never managed to finish writing this Passion. Now the Bach specialists Lorenz and Christoph Eglhuber, together with the renowned conductor Hansjörg Albrecht, have gone into Bach’s copying and composing room to write this missing Passion from his own compositions. The result is a highly exciting, dramatic work – from pieces written by Bach himself. The Carl-Philipp-Emanuel-Bach-Chor Hamburg brings it to the stage with the finest cast. The soloists are all absolute Bach experts. The Dresdner Festspielorchester is an orchestra made up of members of top-class ensembles of period performance practice. The audience can expect a festive baroque concert in the Passion season!
