Kearsney College Choir

Fri, Jul 5, 2024, 20:00
Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
Kearsney College Choir, Bernard Krüger (Director)
South Africa celebrates 30 years of democracy in 2024 - and Hamburg celebrates with it! The Kearsney College Choir from Durban (South Africa) will take the Elbphilharmonie by storm! It has been an example of lively, swinging one-off performances and perfect productions for 103 years now. The young choristers have a large following worldwide and have already performed with great success in the USA, Austria, Switzerland, China, Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Singapore and of course Germany. With great pride, the Kearsney College Choir believes in the legacy of Nelson Mandela, who became South Africa’s first democratically elected black president 30 years ago in 1994: »Music is a great gift. It has the power to uplift and liberate us. It enables us human beings to dream. Music unites us to sing with one voice.«

Concert of Christmas Carols at the Warsaw Philharmonic, photo: DELUGA.art Although carols have become a fixture in the musical landscape of winter, we still know little about the origins of music-making over the Christmas period. Numerous internet sources give the oldest mention of carols as being a supposed directive issued by Telesphorus, bishop of Rome, in 129 AD specifying the performance of a ‘Hymn of the Angels’ during a festive mass. Some commentators have even gone so far as to mention the title of the carol which Pope Telesphorus had in mind, overlooking the fact that Christmas services have only been held in the Roman Church since the fourth century, while the song they cite is usually dated to the eighteenth (not the second) century. Although a final answer seems unlikely, the search for the oldest carol continues, attesting to the role which the subject of Christmas has played down the centuries – both in official liturgical songs and in music-making in the home. As every year, this will be evoked for listeners by the Warsaw Philharmonic Choir. During the traditional Christmas concerts, the choir – often accompanied by soloist and instrumentalists – will perform a programme comprising carols old and new, from home and abroad. The repertoire of the December concerts alters slightly each year and offers a unique glance at the wealth of music linked to one of the most important Christian feasts. Bartłomiej Gembicki

Choir of St John’s Cambridge / Thomas Trotter

Thu, Dec 19, 2024, 20:00
Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
Choir of St John’s College, Cambridge, Thomas Trotter (Organ), Christopher Gray (Conductor)
In the UK, they are a musical highlight in the run-up to Christmas: the Advent services and concerts of the choir at St John’s College in Cambridge, broadcast every year on BBC radio. Now the choir, whose roots go back to the 17th century, comes to the Elbphilharmonie with a programme of beautiful English Christmas music. The concert will be conducted by Christopher Gray, who has also been Director of Music at St John’s College since 2023. Over 100 recordings and concert tours worldwide confirm the reputation of the St John’s singers. And in 2022, the ensemble added to a new feather to its cap, becoming the first of the traditional Oxford and Cambridge choirs to admit girls and women to its ranks and thus enriching the full and expressive sound for which the choir has always been praised. The St John’s College Choir is made up of 13 children and young people and a further 18 adult voices, and offers its members – similar to its famous counterparts in Germany, the Thomanerchor and Kreuzchor – comprehensive vocal training. Their repertoire ranges from very old to contemporary music and the young voices particularly enjoy singing an atmospheric Christmas programme like this one.

Celebrate Christmas with Berget Lewis and Friends

Mon, Dec 16, 2024, 20:15
New Amsterdam Orchestra, Berget Lewis (Vocals), Trijntje Oosterhuis (Special guest), Ben Saunders (Special guest), Candy Dulfer (Special guest), ZO! Gospel Choir
It goes without saying that The Concertgebouw and jazz & pop music make a perfect combination. The stages of both the Main Hall and the Recital Hall have borne witness to nearly the whole of jazz history. Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald have both performed here, as have Miles Davis and Louis Armstrong. Famous pop stars and bands that have graced the stage of the Main Hall include Frank Zappa, the Doors and the Eagles, to name but a few. Legendary concerts, in the present as well as the past.
