The Frankfurt Radio Symphony is a regular guest at the Arolsen Palace Concerts. This time, musicians will present Brahms' two string sextets. These masterpieces helped the young Brahms achieve his musical breakthrough. Despite later dismissing them as "long, sentimental pieces," they captivate audiences with their irresistible sound and melodic beauty.

Neben dem »Deutschen Requiem« sind sie es, die dem jungen Brahms einst den musikalischen Durchbruch brachten. In Wächtersbach ist das hr-Sinfonieorchester Frankfurt mit seinen Kammerkonzerten erstmals zu Gast. Zur Premiere wird dabei ganz große Kammermusik von Brahms präsentiert. Sein B-Dur-Streichsextett und sein G-Dur-Streichsextett gehören zu den Meisterwerken der Streicher-Kammermusik. Neben dem »Deutschen Requiem« waren sie es letztlich, die dem jungen Brahms zu seinem musikalischen Durchbruch verhalfen. Auch wenn er sie selbst später als »lange, sentimentale Stücke« geringschätzte, faszinieren sie bis heute durch ihren unwiderstehlichen Klangreiz und ihre melodische Schönheit.

The String Sextet in B flat major, Op. 18, and the String Sextet in G major, Op. 36, are among the masterpieces of string chamber music. Alongside the "German Requiem", they ultimately helped the young Brahms achieve his musical breakthrough. Even though he later dismissed them as "long, sentimental pieces," they continue to fascinate with their irresistible tonal appeal and melodic beauty.

British chamber music paired with a masterpiece of German Romanticism - in this concert, we bring together unjustly unknown pieces with rightfully famous ones. Brahms' Piano Quintet in F minor is part of the musical heritage, like Beethoven's symphonies, and is just as popular today as classics like the Fifth Symphony. On the other hand, Arnold Bax, the British composer born in 1883, was a star in his homeland during his lifetime but later almost fell into obscurity. He was never quite well-known here. However, he has written beautiful music! His First String Quartet is full of romantic melodies and captivates listeners immediately. Our Composer in Residence, James MacMillan, contributes another work from the island with his Second String Quartet, which even music critics rave about, describing it as a "captivating, powerful masterpiece" that captivates narratively and emotionally.
