Max Richter (Piano), Max Richter (Keyboard), Eloisa-Fleur Thom (Violin), Max Baillie (Violin), Connie Pharoah (Viola), Max Ruisi (Cello), Zara Hudson-Kozdoj (Cello)
Welcome to a concert by one of the most influential and acclaimed composers of our time – Max Richter! His characteristic fusion of classical technique and electronic technology, heard on both solo albums and countless pieces for film, dance, art and fashion, have paved the way for a new generation of musicians and made him an iconic composer with fans around the world. His ninth solo album, In A Landscape, is the first one composed and recorded at his peaceful new studio in rural Oxfordshire. According to Richter, it is a fleeting self-portrait of a musician in constant motion. But it also goes much deeper than that. It is music about “uniting polarities.” Bringing together the electronic and the acoustic, the human and the natural world, the big questions of life and the quiet pleasures of living. After grappling with big ideas and thorny social and political questions, the making of In A Landscape has opened up another, greener world for Richter. Above all, making music remains “a way to make a kind of alternate reality,” a constructed world “where everything is in its place.”

Kirill Richter Trio

Thu, Feb 6, 2025, 19:30
Elbphilharmonie, Kleiner Saal (Hamburg)
Kirill Richter (Piano), Alena Zinovieva (Violin), August Krepak (Cello)
The versatile award-winning composer and pianist Kirill Richter, who was already enthusiastically celebrated in the ProArte X series in 2019, is not considered one of the most exciting contemporary artists in Europe for nothing, as he succeeds like no other in combining form and emotion, magical sounds and fragility in his music. The young Russian has been working with his trio for many years, which is evident in the perfect harmony with which the three artists interact on stage. A highlight not to be missed!

CANCELLED: Mischa Maisky

Wed, Jan 8, 2025, 20:00
Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
Mischa Maisky (Cello)
This concert has been cancelled due to illness. Tickets can be refunded at point of purchase. 40 years ago, Mischa Maisky recorded the six solo suites for cello by Johann Sebastian Bach – a legendary recording. »Bach was the greatest Romantic of his time, and on many different levels.« With these words, cellist Mischa Maisky describes his approach to the music of Johann Sebastian Bach. Bach not only wrote the greatest amount of remarkable music in the history of music, he was also a father and was therefore at the centre of life. Maisky’s gripping, emotionally charged interpretation of the Thomaskantor’s music is based on this understanding, making it certainly one of, if not the central work in Maisky’s concert repertoire. With a mischievous smile, he declaims: »If I say that music is my religion, then these six solo suites are my bible.« Who is still surprised that Maisky’s cello suites are an absolute hit on YouTube? The first suite currently has over 58 million views, a figure that dwarfs anything comparable. But contact with the audience has always been the most important thing for Maisky. Performing the complete Bach suites is one of the most strenuous tasks as a soloist: »They are undoubtedly the greatest challenge. And the most beautiful when they succeed.« However, he is never interested in showing how well he can play. »I will never be the best cellist, but I could certainly play more precisely and clearly if I concentrated on that.« But then something else that is more essential to him would be lost: »Expressiveness. That’s more important to me than perfection.«
