Every season, the »Master Pianists« concert series presents a promising young talent who has the potential to become a star. The choice was not difficult this time round: since his explosive success at the 2021 Chopin Competition in Warsaw, 25-year-old Bruce Liu has been literally swamped with concert offers. An exclusive recording contract with Deutsche Grammophon in spring 2022 was followed in the summer by an unprecedented triumphal procession from one European festival to the next. Dear Guests,We would like to inform you that the starting time of the concert has been changed from 18:00 to 19:30. This is a moment everyone has been waiting for – Bruce Liu returns to NOSPR!In 2021, several days after his spectacular triumph in the 18th Chopin Competition, Bruce Liu gained 1,800 new fans as soon as he stepped onto the NOSPR stage (more people did not manage to enter the hall, even though, as we can remember, they tried!). Nevertheless, if we take into account the 300,000 online broadcast viewers, we can say that the concert sealed the Canadian pianist’s superstar status.Back then, Bruce Liu performed the Piano Concerto No. 1 in E-minor, with which he had won the competition. This time, we are going to hear the second one of Chopin’s concertos – the one in the key of F-minor. Both in the Concerto and in the Andante spianato et grande polonaise brillante in E-flat major, the latter to open the evening, he will be accompanied by theAmsterdam Sinfonietta, led by Candida Thompson. You might also remember these artists from NOSPR posters: in 2020, the ensemble and its leader were to accompany the Jussen brothers, but their performance was cancelled due to the pandemic.In the April concert, the Dutch orchestra will also present Tchaikovsky’s Souvenir de Florence and Mieczysław Weinberg’s deeply moving Aria. When Sergei Prokofiev was commissioned to write a ballet and was given a choice of three different stories, he immediately opted for »Romeo and Juliet«: »I ›bit‹ straight into the plot, it would have been hard to find a better one!« No wonder, as perhaps the world’s most famous love story by William Shakespeare delivers plenty of drama, great emotions and an exciting, eventful plot. The orchestra of the spectacular National Centre for the Performing Arts – Beijing’s Elbphilharmonie, so to speak – can unfold its full potential here. Maurice Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G major is just as enjoyable to listen to: The French composer was inspired by American music, more specifically jazz. He skilfully transfers the lascivious jazz sounds to the orchestra, just as George Gershwin had done a few years earlier in his Rhapsody in Blue. Bruce Liu is a true high-flyer at the keys. Born in Paris in 1997 and raised in Montreal, Canada, he impressed with breathtaking performances at the prestigious Chopin Competition in 2021. Deutsche Grammophon immediately signed him. NDR Kultur called his first studio album with solo works by Maurice Ravel »an event in every respect!« He now follows this up with the composer’s solo concerto, accompanied by one of the best orchestras from China under the direction of South Korean star conductor Myung-Whun Chung.
