NDR Vokalensemble / Akademie für Alte Musik / Klaas Stok

Fri, Jun 20, 2025, 20:00
Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
NDR Vokalensemble, Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, Klaas Stok (Director)
The NDR Vokalensemble and the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin perform works by Antonio Lotti, Antonio Vivaldi and Antonio Caldara in the Elbphilharmonie Grand Hall. The conductor is Klaas Stok. Antonio must have been a real fashionable name for a while. How else can it be explained that three Venetians named Antonio achieved world fame at almost the same time? Antonio Lotti, Antonio Caldara, and Antonio Vivaldi, who is still famous today. Born and educated in the musical metropolis of the Baroque par excellence, the three composers developed into Venice’s most important export hits. Greats such as Johann Sebastian Bach studied their works, and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart stole one or two musical figures for his own compositions.

Carl-Philipp-Emanuel-Bach-Chor Hamburg, Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, Hansjörg Albrecht (Director)
The Magnificat by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, in which Mary expresses her love for God, but in which Mary is also celebrated as the epitome of love among mankind, forms the jubilant prelude to the final concert of this year’s International Bach Festival Hamburg with its youthful fire. In this concert, father and son face each other. Can the younger one stand up to the comparison with the older one? Can the son emancipate himself from the father with whom he was trained and learnt? The performers for this musical comparison are the Carl-Philipp-Emanuel-Bach-Choir Hamburg, the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin and Hansjörg Albrecht.

The Bach Festival for the chest organ will feature four organists showcasing this rich sound with up to four organs.

Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin

Tue, Oct 22, 2024, 20:00
Konzerthaus Berlin, Großer Saal (Berlin)
Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, Carlo Vistoli (Countertenor), Xenia Löffler (Oboe), Georg Kallweit (Violin)
In their first joint programme, Akamus and the up-and-coming star of the countertenor scene Carlo Vistoli dedicate themselves to key works of church music: Vivaldi set religious texts such as the psalm ‘Nisi Dominus’ to music with bittersweet sadness and operatic verve. The Venetian composer's ‘Stabat mater’, on the other hand, is one of the darkest baroque settings of the pain of Mary, the ‘Mater dolorosa’ and mother of Jesus. ‘I have had enough’ is also one of Bach's most moving cantatas.

Sophie Hunger: Walzer für Niemand

Sun, Mar 23, 2025, 18:00
Elbphilharmonie, Kleiner Saal (Hamburg)
Sophie Hunger (Reading), Sophie Hunger (Vocals), Sophie Hunger (Guitar)
»Walzer für Niemand« (Waltz for Nobody): that’s the name of a song by Sophie Hunger, released in 2008 on her debut album »Monday’s Ghost«. And it is also the name of her first novel, which will be published in spring 2025. The coming-of-age story, which is as unfathomable as it is poetic, tragicomic and sophisticated, tells of what we have to lose in order to become something. As part of her »Reflektor« festival at the Elbphilharmonie, Sophie Hunger will read from her book and sing some of her songs, accompanied only by herself on the guitar. The novel tells the story of a girl and her best friend Niemand. Their upbringing is characterised by constant changes of location. Carried by the rhythm of music, they experience the magic and shocks of childhood and adolescence. They are happiest when they lose themselves in their record collection or find the phrases in songs that have always lurked inside them. They hide in the music and are hidden by it, but they always have each other. But then the friendship cracks and a catastrophe is in the offing.

The programme includes works by the extended Bach family as well as by composers who are largely unknown today and who preceded the later Thomaskantor in his important positions in Mühlhausen, Weimar and Leipzig. From the oeuvre of Johann Sebastian Bach, the double-choir motet ‘Der Geist hilft unser Schwachheit auf’ will be performed..
