Midsummer Night’s Dreams with Marc Minkowski and the Karajan Academy

Tue, Apr 23, 2024, 20:00
Philharmonie Berlin, Chamber Music Hall (Berlin)
Karajan-Akademie der Berliner Philharmoniker (Orchestra), and Guests (Orchestra), Karajan-Akademie der Berliner Philharmoniker (Ensemble), Marc Minkowski (Conductor), Alina Wunderlin (Soprano), Miriam Albano (Mezzo-Soprano), RIAS Kammerchor (Choir)
Almost everyone knows the festive Wedding March from Mendelssohn’s music to A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Schubert’s lilting entr’acte to Act III of Rosamunde. The complete incidental music to these plays, however, is unjustly neglected. Their sequences of instrumental pieces, dance, vocal and choral movements lead us into the magical worlds of sprites and knights. Marc Minkowski, directing the RIAS Kammerchor and the Karajan Academy, presents a selection of the most beautiful pieces from both works.

Joana Mallwitz makes her debut with the Berliner Philharmoniker

Sat, Mar 8, 2025, 19:00
Philharmonie Berlin, Main Auditorium (Berlin)
Berliner Philharmoniker (Orchestra), Joana Mallwitz (Conductor), Anna Vinnitskaya (Piano)
When she is on the podium, says Joana Mallwitz, she wants to take the audience with her “from the very first note”. This approach has already brought her a remarkably successful career. After holding positions as General Music Director in Erfurt and Nuremberg, she has been Chief Conductor of the Konzerthausorchester Berlin since 2023. In her debut with the Berliner Philharmoniker, she leads us through very different worlds of sound with works by Prokofiev, Hindemith and Ravel. Anna Vinnitskaya will be the soloist in Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No. 3, a work full of dreamy melancholy and pianistic brilliance.

Communal Concert of the Academies of the Concertgebouw Orchestra and the BRSO

Sat, Mar 26, 2022, 19:00
Daniel Harding (Conductor), Academy of the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, Akademie des Concertgebouworkest Amsterdam
For years Mariss Jansons was the principal conductor of both the BRSO and the Amsterdam Concertgebouw Orchestra. If gifted young musicians from two academies now assemble in Munich for a concert, they do so in memory of this great conductor, who left an indelible imprint on both orchestras. Jansons had a firm commitment to talented young orchestral musicians, and the idea of the academy continues in his spirit, helping graduates to find their way into professional orchestras. Now, for the first time since their initial exchange of 2019, the two academies reunite in a concert that straddles the boundaries of Germany and the Netherlands. Wagner’s Siegfried Idyll, George Benjamin’s modernist take on Purcell and Richard Strauss’s Suite from Der Bürger als Edelmann give these young musicians ample opportunity to display their prowess under the baton of Daniel Harding.

Mahler Festival: Chianti Ensemble with Mahler and more

Sun, May 11, 2025, 11:00
Chianti Ensemble
In the Recital Hall this week, you will hear the 'other side' of Mahler: works for just a few musicians. In two Sunday Morning Concerts, these come together with those of Mahler's contemporaries and friends. Today, the Chianti Ensemble performs, among others, the Piano Quartet, Mahler's only remaining chamber work.Mahler wrote his Piano Quartet as a teenager. Certainly for Mahler's standards, it is very romantic, Schumannesque - and unfinished. A first movement is complete, but only a few bars of the scherzo exist. The piece was recovered by his widow Alma Mahler in the 1960s. The Chianti Ensemble, operating from the Netherlands, consists of five internationally sought-after soloists, and today performs Mahler's quartet alongside pieces by Webern and Dvořák.
