Midsummer Night’s Dreams with Marc Minkowski and the Karajan Academy

Tue, Apr 23, 2024, 20:00
Philharmonie Berlin, Chamber Music Hall (Berlin)
Karajan-Akademie der Berliner Philharmoniker (Orchestra), and Guests (Orchestra), Karajan-Akademie der Berliner Philharmoniker (Ensemble), Marc Minkowski (Conductor), Alina Wunderlin (Soprano), Miriam Albano (Mezzo-Soprano), RIAS Kammerchor (Choir)
Almost everyone knows the festive Wedding March from Mendelssohn’s music to A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Schubert’s lilting entr’acte to Act III of Rosamunde. The complete incidental music to these plays, however, is unjustly neglected. Their sequences of instrumental pieces, dance, vocal and choral movements lead us into the magical worlds of sprites and knights. Marc Minkowski, directing the RIAS Kammerchor and the Karajan Academy, presents a selection of the most beautiful pieces from both works.

Sir Simon Rattle & BRSO academy

Mon, Dec 18, 2023, 20:00
Sir Simon Rattle (Conductor), Allan Clayton (Tenor), Academy of the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks
“A group like this academy is the future of music. There is no question for me to want to be part of it”, Simon Rattle says. When he became the new Chief Conductor, he also assumed patronage of the BRSO’s renowned training center. He had already pointed out that academy students were getting better and better during his time in Berlin: “There is nothing they can’t do.” And so, for the first joint project with the BRSO Academy, he chose a particularly demanding work right away: Schubert’s Winterreise by Hans Zender. The work’s subtitle, “a composed interpretation”, suggests that it goes beyond a mere orchestral arrangement. Zender illuminates Schubert’s depths with stylistic elements of modernism – which poses considerable technical and interpretive challenges for the young musicians. The vocal part is performed by Allan Clayton, one of today’s leading tenors, who most recently excelled in the title role of Brett Dean’s Hamlet at the Bayerische Staatsoper.
