The »St John Passion« is one of the most important and moving compositions in the history of music. In the 300 years since its premiere, it has not lost its emotional impact with which Johann Sebastian Bach set to music the suffering of Jesus Christ. Composed for Good Friday in 1724, this great work now sounds on the same bank holiday at the Elbphilharmonie. The period ensemble Pygmalion plays under the direction of its conductor Raphaël Pichon. At nine years old, the French Pichon sang the »St John Passion« for the first time – a crucial experience for the singer and conductor. For many years, Bach’s music remained and forms the core repertoire of the Pygmalion ensemble, which Pichon established in 2007. Historically informed and always with a fresh look at the music, these concerts are hailed by audiences and critics. The musicians play instruments which originate from the time of the Passion or were replicated and ensure a unique listening experience. Renowned tenor Julian Prégardien is also involved in the role of the evangelist.

The week before Easter wouldn’t be complete without Bach’s always overwhelming St Matthew Passion, which for decades has been one of the most popular works among classical music lovers in the Netherlands. Bach composed the Passion nearly 300 years ago in such an emotional, compelling way that it leaves few listeners unmoved.The Concertgebouw Orchestra first performed the work in January 1891, and eight years later, the annual Passion tradition was officially established. This year’s Passion performance features Riccardo Minasi, one of the most interesting conductors to rise to fame in recent years, and a specialist in eighteenth-century music. Originally scheduled for 2020, his first appearance with the Concertgebouw Orchestra was postponed owing to the coronavirus pandemic. It’s high time he came to share his vision of Bach’s immortal masterpiece with the Concertgebouw Orchestra.

The Netherlands Chamber Orchestra was formed in 1955, since when its rich history has included many notable achievements. Even after the merger with the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra in 1985, the ensemble lost none of its unique identity. The dynamics between the members of the orchestra are particularly striking. They rarely play under the baton of a conductor but interact with each other almost instinctively. There is a remarkable chemistry, as is apparent during every performance. Gordan Nikolić has been the leader, or ‘concertmaster’, of the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra since 2004.
