Aural Spaces – Morning Sound Bath: DOMNIQ presents Water Ripples in 4DSOUND (live)

When it comes to percussion, DOMNIQ is one of the most widely appreciated and groundbreaking artists. Just a year after graduating, he won the Tromp International Percussion Competition, and in 2020 he was the first percussionist to win the Dutch Music Prize. DOMNIQ is constantly looking for fresh connections within his discipline – crossovers with club music, dance, and theater are no strangers to him. In addition to his virtuoso playing and infectious curiosity for different movements, Vleeshouwers is an expressive performer who can be very theatrical, and then very vulnerable and intimate. At Aural Spaces, he brings a Morning Sound Bath – titled Water Ripples – that embraces and triggers the space and its visitors. The sounds he creates are complemented by surreal images of nature – from delicate raindrops to the vastness of a dark cave. Visitors are immersed in the warm 4D sound world, where familiar phenomena are transformed into the extraordinary. Wonder and questions predominate here: 'What if raindrops rose instead of falling? And the ceiling became our floor, or the floor our sky?'.This concert is part of the Aural Spaces festival. From 12 to 15 December, a new dimension will be added to the live music experience in the Recital Hall of The Concertgebouw. The familiar red plush chairs will make way for a 4DSOUND installation, consisting of 13 pillars with 41 speakers. Classical acoustic methods are combined with the modern technology of 4DSOUND, further expanding the possibilities of sound experience.Aural Spaces explores the boundaries between sound and space, blurring them and merging them. The result is a completely immersive listening experience that’s all too rare. Discover and feel how the music moves through space!

Aural Spaces – Alma Quartet presents Beethoven's Grosse Fuge in 4DSOUND (live)

Sat, Dec 14, 2024, 19:30
Alma Quartet, Poul Holleman
One moment you are listening to a string quartet in a traditional setting, and then you are surprised when the melodies of the various instruments start to dance around you. With respect for the original work, experiments are made with the material to bring the subtle as well as coarse dynamics of the piece to life in new dimensions. Different ways are explored to express the richness of the string instruments, even to the point of abstraction, where you end up in a world of sound rather than listening to music, until another melody appears on the horizon. The Alma Quartet is a renowned string ensemble of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra that brings together innovation and tradition in an exciting and unprecedented way. ‘They have a collective antenna for refined timbres’, according to de Volkskrant. The Alma Quartet consists of Marc Daniel van Biemen (violin), Benjamin Peled (violin), Jeroen Woudstra (viola), and Clément Peigné (cello). The quartet has a trademark knack for special collaborations, projects in which classical music flawlessly bleeds into the domains of pop, folk music, avant-garde and jazz. The Alma Quartet is also widely acclaimed within classical circles all over the world, especially for their unique interpretations of Korngold and Schulhoff. This concert is part of the Aural Spaces festival. Aural Spaces – CTM in 4DSOUND (live), presented by Entrée

Thu, Dec 12, 2024, 19:00
CTM
Cæcilie Trier's roots lie in the bustling Copenhagen music scene where Iceage, Puce Mary and Andreas Führer also come from. Trier is a much sought-after session musician all over the world – she has worked with artists as diverse as Dean Blunt, Trentemøller and Marching Church. CTM is equally at home in the worlds of classical, film music, experimental pop and electronica. At times her music sounds intimate and familiar, but the unexpected twist and glitchy disruption are always lurking, which can suddenly change the level of tension. The combination of resonant melodies, pop sensibility and bleed-edge improvisation creates a poetic and open atmosphere.Trier's career is brimming with praise, especially for her album Suite For A Young Girl, which was nominated for the prestigious Nordic Music Prize in 2017. Followed by the critically acclaimed album Red dragon (Posh Isolation, 2018), the album Celeste by the duo Trier/Rosenbaum (Posh Isolation, 2021), the album Babygirl (Posh Isolation, 2022). CMT's most recent album Vind (15 love, 2023), consists of 12-part solo cello compositions, produced by Jakob Littauer. This concert is commissioned by Concertvrienden, Entrée and 4DSOUND. Supported and coproduced by MONOM.This concert is part of the Aural Spaces festival. Aural Spaces – Loraine James in 4DSOUND (live), presented by FIBER Festival

Fri, Dec 13, 2024, 19:30
Loraine James
In recent years, Loraine James has emerged as one of the most forward-thinking producers of the moment. Experimental never stands synonymous with inaccessibility within James' playful vocabulary: a dizzying mix of jazz, electronica, UK drill, pop and grime. With her album For You And I (2019), she seeks out the raw edges, transmitting her signature sound as a queer, Black and British artist, with the catchy pop melody often forming the springboard for bold experimentation.Successor Reflection is a more streamlined and minimalist project that shows the introspective and intimate side of club music. Building Something Beautiful For Me (2022), was James's tribute to the iconic New York minimal composer Julius Eastman, a musical reinterpretation and response to his legacy. In 2023, she released the LP Gentle Confrontation, which explores both her past and present. James says it’s the record she would have liked to have made as a teenager – the album’s musical tendencies reflecting that period in her life. In between albums, James delves into countless impulsive projects – such as her unruly alter ego Whatever The Weather – in which the sheer joy of her creative process is palpable.During Aural Spaces, James will apply her boundless creativity and expressive, almost diary-like approach within the 4DS Soundsystem, which will of course result in a singular musical experience. For this special occasion, she will perform a brand new musical project, commissioned for Aural Spaces. This concert is co-presented and commissioned by FIBER Festival and Concertvrienden, Entrée and 4DSOUND. Supported and co-produced by MONOM.FIBER Festival is an Amsterdam-based festival and platform for contemporary digital culture, audiovisual art and progressive music culture. Through the lens of art, FIBER reflects on the ever-changing impact of technology on society and the planet. They explore these topics collectively through lectures, installation art, club nights and by showing groundbreaking artistic processes to a broad audience. This concert is part of the Aural Spaces festival. Aural Spaces – Marijn & Julia present Wind takes Flight in 4DSOUND (live)

Sun, Dec 15, 2024, 20:30
Marijn Cinjee (Producer), Julia Sinclair (Soprano)
Marijn & Julia is the joint project of Dutch sound artist Marijn Cinjee and English soprano Julia Sinclair. Marijn Cinjee’s work pursues immersive audiovisual experiences that both amaze and stimulate. He doesn’t try to impose what people should feel when encountering his work; the aim is to evoke emotions and sensations from within. His progressive mentality forms a special fusion with Sinclair’s awe-inspiring voice, grounded in centuries-old tradition. Julia Sinclair has sung in many professional church choirs, including St Magnus the Martyr, London Bridge and St Bride's, Fleet Street, and is a member of the Consort Choir at the Edinburgh Music Festival. This exciting fusion of history and the contemporary is also reflected in Aural Spaces, where Marijn & Julia perform the album project Wind takes Flight. A meeting of the 12th century singing of Hildegard von Bingen and modern electronics, performed with the dynamic 4DS sound. The sharp contrast between classical singing and modern elements and technologies wonderfully emphasizes the timeless beauty of the human voice through the ages.Created with the support of the Richard Thomas Foundation. This concert is part of the Aural Spaces festival. Aural Spaces – Masterclass James Allister Sprang & 4DSOUND: Play the Space as an Instrument

Fri, Dec 13, 2024, 10:30
James Allister Sprang, Poul Holleman
James Allister Sprang’s multidisciplinary work weaves in sculpture, visuals, and music, using sound to immerse audiences in a sonic cocoon that explores topics such as longing, nostalgia, disembodied voices, and representations of spirits unseen. His approach to spatial sound invites us to listen deeply while welcoming our own bodies, our ancestors, our traumas, our pain, our longings, visions, and dreams. During this talk, he will discuss his own journey in the spatial sound field, and his distinctive approach to creating in 4DSOUND.What are the possibilities of 4DSOUND? What are interesting ways to play the system? How can you apply 4DSOUND in different contexts? What else is sound spatialization besides placing and moving sounds? How does it work, and most importantly: how does it sound? Holleman and Sprang discuss the underlying concept and fundamental principles, with a strong focus on the system in action, because hearing is believing. This Masterclass is aimed at professionals and people from the field, but Aural Spaces also welcomes general interested parties who would like to be surprised by spatial sound. Please note: this masterclass is in English.4DSOUND is an Amsterdam-based studio focusing on spatial sound as a creative medium. Aural Spaces – Interactive Session: Bring Your Own Sounds

Thu, Dec 12, 2024, 13:00
Robin Koek, Mint Park
In this interactive session of 1,5 hours, you will be introduced to spatial listening, spatial composition and learn about, and most importantly listen to, artistic practices and sonic examples within the 4DSOUND system. Beforehand, you will capture sounds from your own surroundings using audio recording on your smartphone (or any other audio recording device), which you will share with our team before the event. We will turn them into a variety of listening experiences, in combination with the sound of other participants.Together, we bring in urban and natural sounds from outside The Concertgebouw, to the Recital Hall to be experienced as a crowd-sourced listening piece. In-between the listening moments, we will have a conversation about the experiences of spatial listening, learn from artist-composers Robin Koek and Mint Park and get to know the basics of the 4DSOUND system. Join us for a morning of collective listening and recomposing our city's sounds. After buying a ticket you will receive an email with instructions and a link to upload your recorded sounds to a folder shared with the 4DSOUND team.
