The world beyond the Arctic Circle is a realm like no other – vast expanses, majestic mountains and crystal-clear fjords define its breathtaking beauty. The Norwegian violinist Eldbjørg Hemsing has captured these landscapes in music, performing alongside the Arctic Philharmonic, the world’s northernmost professional orchestra. Their programme combines Nordic classics from composers like Grieg and Rautavaara with specially commissioned pieces by film composers including Frode Fjellheim (title song to »Frozen«) and Jacob Shea (»Planet Earth II«). Old meets new and the familiar meets the strange and fairytale-like in the Hamburg Philharmonic State Orchestra’s 2nd Academy Concert, when the propulsive, youthful freshness of the just-turned-seventeen Mozart meets the relatively unknown Romantic sound of Hamburg-born Ferdinand David. Things take an atmospheric turn with Ralph Vaughan Williams, whose music is a resounding reflection of his origins and homeland in England. Just like Edvard Grieg’s »Peer Gynt« from Norway.

Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
Copenhagen Philharmonic Orchestra (Orchestra), Christoph Gedschold (Conductor)
The Copenhagen Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Christoph Gedschold, presents a profound programme: Haydn’s »Farewell Symphony« and Wagner’s »Prelude« and »Liebestod« from »Tristan und Isolde« reveal a close relationship in terms of content, as death and farewell are fundamentally related. Schumann’s 2nd Symphony is diametrically opposed to this, even though this work was composed during a period of deep crisis in the composer’s life.

Sheku Kanneh-Mason (Cello), London Philharmonic Orchestra (Ensemble), Edward Gardner (Conductor)

Anne-Sophie Mutter (Violin), London Philharmonic Orchestra (Ensemble), Karina Canellakis (Conductor)

Vienna Philharmonic / Lorenzo Viotti

Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
Wiener Philharmoniker, Lorenzo Viotti (Conductor)
Was it winter when Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov wrote his »Capriccio espagnol«? One can certainly vividly imagine the composer well warpped-up and seated before the fireplace as he dreamt his way to warmer regions. But whenever it was written, the work conjures up the flamenco, fiestas and mild nights under a southern sky. With their musical journey beyond the boundaries of space and time, the fantastic Vienna Philharmonic under the baton of young Swiss conductor Lorenzo Viotti once again show that their reputation as one of the world’s best orchestras is well-deserved. Sergei Rachmaninov’s »Toteninsel« (Isle of the Dead): is a strong contrast to Rimsky-Korsakov’s »Capriccio«. Inspired by an Arnold Böcklin painting, the composer depicts life after death in the swelling, rushing sound of infinity. And in his Seventh Symphony of 1884, Antonín Dvořák likewise portrays a different world: with dramatic conflicts and echoes of Bohemian folk songs, the music dreams of the political independence of the Czech Republic, which was still part of the Hapsburg Empire at the time.

Munich Philharmonic / Daniel Harding

Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
Münchner Philharmoniker, Daniel Harding (Conductor)
Daniel Harding is by no means a stranger to the Munich Philharmonic. The British conductor regularly works with the venerable orchestra, which celebrated its 130th anniversary at the beginning of the season. An eventful time full of musical highlights: there is surely no other orchestra that performs the great repertoire as magnificently and colourfully as the Philharmonic from the Bavarian capital. Take Gustav Mahler’s phenomenal Symphony No. 5, for example. When it was premiered in 1904, the large-scale work, with its five expansive movements, broke through the boundaries of what had previously been considered possible. Surrounded by an infernal orchestral frenzy, the fourth movement alone provides some sense of relaxation. After it was featured in Visconti’s film »Death in Venice«, this enchanting adagietto became Mahler’s most popular creation. With his 1926 symphonic poem »Tapiola«, a musical invocation of the Finnish forest god Tapio, Jean Sibelius composed his last great orchestral work.
