For the workshop »Klassiko Special« we have unpacked some of the most unusual instruments from the Elbphilharmonie’s huge collection, which participants can try out themselves. This workshop offers a tour through the classical symphony orchestra. From the violin, cello and double bass to the trumpet and flute: participants can try them all out. And there are instruments in different sizes for youngsters and adults alike. To conclude the workshop, a little music-making session where everyone joins in shows that all the instruments harmonise. Please note: this workshop is aimed at families with children aged six and above. Children younger than six may not participate in this workshop. All participants need a ticket.

In addition to the strings in a classical symphony orchestra – the violin, viola, cello and double bass –, the mandolin is presented, as are the banjo and the ukulele. And the harp is also featured. Gamelan music originated on the islands of Bali and Java many hundreds of years ago. It is played in a group on gongs, metallophones and drums. Its unique sound already fascinated composers like Debussy and has many fans in Europe to this day. The Elbphilharmonie owns a particularly fine ensemble of gamelan instruments, and this workshop offers the opportunity to try them out, and to hear what a remarkable sound they produce when they all are played together. Please note: this workshop is aimed at young people aged 16 or older and adults. Children younger than 16 may not participate in this workshop. All participants need a ticket.

Composers like Steve Reich and Philip Glass made the style famous all over the world. Workshop participants learn about minimal music, can try out various instruments, and at the end play their own piece written in the style. Please note: this workshop is aimed at families with children aged ten and above. Children younger than ten may not participate in this workshop. All participants need a ticket.

With their limitless tonal possibilities, analogue synthesisers shaped the sound of 20th century pop music – and, despite all digital developments, are more popular than ever today. In the workshop, participants can extensively try out cables, buttons and knobs and create exciting sounds, noises and tunes using electricity. A dozen analogue, modular synthesisers are available for experimenting and improvising – and not only on your own, but also all the more exciting together as an ensemble! This workshop will be run by synth expert Gammon. He has played the modular synthesiser since the mid-1990s and will bring pieces for the group to the workshop or assist you in composing. He is a composer and producer for theatre, dance and performance projects himself. In 2013, he was awarded the international music mediation prize »Junge Ohren« (Young Ears) and won the German competition »Kinder zum Olymp« (Children to Olympus). With his workshop format »Modular Synthesizer Ensemble«, he has been a guest at the SUPERBOOTH in Berlin since 2017 and regularly at the Elbphilharmonie since 2018. Gammon also collaborates internationally with educational and cultural institutions.

The WDR Big Band invites young jazz musicians to an exclusive coaching session and lunch concert at the WDR Funkhaus. Shortly after, the WDR Big Band will visit schools for a concert, where the school's big band can perform as the opening act. A must for all schools that love jazz.

“Workshop.Dialogue.Music” Concert breakfast at the Palais Populaire

In the popular chamber music series “Workshop.Dialogue.Music”, musicians of the Berliner Philharmoniker introducing themselves and their instruments, and talking in a relaxed atmosphere about the works presented, their interpretation and their approach. Questions and a dialogue with the audience are very welcome! A new feature is that visitors can enjoy a French breakfast from 11:00 onwards, before the concert begins at 11:30. Breakfast is included in the ticket price.
