Philharmonic Day – Concert featuring Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra

Philharmonic Day concludes with a varied concert program. First, drama and beauty in the music from Ethel Smyth’s On the Cliffs of Cornwall, taken from her opera The Wreckers. Then … well, what exactly is this so-called “Ambulance Music”? You’ll find out, but we can tell you it’s not about blaring siren, quite the opposite. Finally, it’s time for film music, as the master John Williams takes us to the Wild West. The music was written for the 1972 film The Cowboys. The Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra is conducted by Andreas van Tol, with Konserthuset Stockholm’s CEO Susanne Rydén as host.Strollers and prams cannot be brought into Konserthuset Stockholm and are best left at home. A designated stroller tent is set up outside the entrance, where prams can be left, subject to space availability.

Twelfth Night Concert and Dance

In the entertaining Epiphany Concert, the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra is led by the British conductor John Wilson. He is an authority on film music and has reconstructed and arranged many classic soundtracks for concert settings. Since 1994, Wilson leads his own hand-picked orchestra, specializing in film and musicals, and performs annually at The Proms summer festival.The Twelfth Night Concert 2023 was a resounding success when British conductor John Wilson led the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra in a program blending seductive film music with the best from the world of musicals. Therefore, it is with great pleasure that we welcome him back in a programme featuring irresistible musical hits by the very best in the genre – Bernstein, Sondheim, Gershwin, and Rodgers & Hammerstein, among others.On vocals: the British actor and musical star Julian Ovenden. He has appeared in television series in both England and the USA and participated in numerous famous musical productions on Broadway in New York and in the West End in London. International Composer Festival – Ghosts

This year's International Composer Festival at Konserthuset Stockholm is dedicated to the Scottish composer James MacMillan. His music combines raw emotional power with spiritual focus, rooted in his Catholic faith.MacMillan often draws inspiration from traditional Scottish music and culture, and the tone poem The Death of Oscar is based on one of the legends of the Celtic poet Ossian. These ancient stories have had a significant influence on the image of Scotland, inspiring composers such as Mendelssohn-Bartholdy when he wrote The Hebrides, and Goethe in The Sorrows of Young Werther.The trombone concerto oscillates between darkness and light, with dance-like episodes and meditative calm. At times, it is incredibly beautiful and poignant. MacMillan composed it in memory of his granddaughter Sara Maria MacMillan, who died at the young age of five from an incurable brain disease.James MacMillan shares his strong Catholic faith with Olivier Messiaen (1908–92), and both composers' music contains spiritually meditative elements. Messiaen's Les offrandes oubliées – The Forgotten Offerings – was his very first published orchestral piece. It is subtitled Méditation symphonique, symphonic meditation. This is music in which Messiaen gives us his own glimpse of eternity.The Concerto for Orchestra, ”Ghosts”, is the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra's co-commissioned work for the festival. The piece was premiered a few months ago in London. International Composer Festival – Drama with three notes

This year's International Composer Festival at Konserthuset Stockholm is dedicated to the Scottish composer James MacMillan. His music combines raw emotional power with spiritual focus, rooted in his Catholic faith.The concert begins with an overture: Eleven. Music with a sports theme, inspired by the local football teams in East Ayrshire, Scotland, where MacMillan grew up. Eleven refers to the number of players in a team, and much of the music is built around the number eleven. The piece starts with the sound of a referee's whistle, and familiar melodies from football chants also emerge.At the heart of the expressive second violin concerto is a simple theme with just three notes played pizzicato at the beginning. As often in MacMillan's music, there are dance-like elements, but also melancholic passages that can suddenly burst open and let in light, like clearings in a dark forest. The soloist is the acclaimed Swedish violinist Ava Bahari.In the short piece One for chamber orchestra, the atmosphere is idyllic with simple folk music-inspired melodies. Tryst has strong elements of Scottish folk music, but also of other music that has been important to him. "Tryst" can refer to a secret meeting place for lovers, but farmers in Scotland often use the word to describe a place where animals gather, a "trysting place". Here, MacMillan uses Tryst to describe a meeting place for music that is dear to him.The Swedish Chamber Orchestra performs under the direction of Brett Dean, who himself was the subject of the International Composer Festival at Konserthuset in 2011, but is also internationally active as a conductor.Read our interview with James MacMillan (in Swedish)

Soup with winds and percussion

Two wind players and a percussionist from the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, together with a guesting wind player and percussionist, present music ranging from Monteverdi to Joakim Agnas, who is the orchestra's principal trumpeter and also a composer.In between, there’s a wide variety of pieces, including Swedish Lisa Streich’s Apelsin (Streich was the focus of Konserthuset’s Composer Weekend Festival this spring), a trio by Poulenc, as well as a special arrangement of Mozart’s famous variations on Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star. A great American composers also feature: the inventive Charles Ives, with From the Steeples and the Mountains.In addition to Joakim Agnas, the concert features Karl Frisendahl, principal trombonist, the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra's timpanist Anders Haag, and guest trumpeter Jonas Lindeborg and percussionist Ulf Ewasson Liliansdotter.***Menu: Creamy tomato soup with basil. Herbert Blomstedt is Sweden's internationally most recognized conductor – ever. Among the orchestras he has worked with are the Gewandhaus Orchestra in Leipzig, the Berlin Philharmonic, the Orchestre de Paris, and notably the San Francisco Symphony, where Blomstedt was chief conductor for ten years. Blomstedt has also conducted the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra on well over 200 occasions, and on the occasion of his 90th birthday in 2017, Konserthuset named its grand conductor's dressing room after him.As he makes another cherished visit to the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, it is with two favorites, Franz Berwald and Brahms. Memories from the Norwegian mountains came to him after a visit to Norway, and Berwald described the Nordic-sounding music as orchestral tonal painting. The restlessly bustling Sinfonie capricieuse is surrounded by mystique, for shortly after Berwald's death, the score disappeared under mysterious circumstances. The music was later reconstructed by Nils Castegren based on Berwald's remaining sketches.Johannes Brahms's first symphony is undoubtedly a masterpiece. The symphony was crafted over many years, with Brahms at times almost paralyzed by the performance demands of his idol Beethoven. However, the end result is magnificent and shaped with precision, intense emotion, and great beauty.

Summer Concert with Wagner

Helena Munktell’s romantic Suite for large orchestra is a piece that the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra has never before performed in its entirety. The music was composed in 1895, and like the now often performed Bränningar, this suite was premiered in Monte Carlo in the late 19th century.Next, we hear the young Swedish soprano Jessica Elevant tackle Wagner's Wesendonck Songs – music filled with burning longing and celestial beauty. Jessica Elevant has recently gained attention for her participation in Daniel Nelson's opera Pride and Prejudice at the Norrlandsoperan. This marks her debut with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra.Another debutant is Sergej Bolkhovets – as a conductor, that is. He has previously been a violin soloist with the orchestra. He leads the orchestra in Shostakovich's first symphony. Already in this symphony, Shostakovich demonstrates his phenomenal ability to handle the orchestra. It's personal music with humorous twists and great finesse. A remarkable symphonic debut by a 19-year-old composer.
