Famoudou Don Moye »Odyssey & Legacy« Trio
Elbphilharmonie, Kleiner Saal (Hamburg)
When »Famoudou« Don Moye sits at the drums, jazz drumming and African-inspired percussion merge to create fascinating music. Born in 1946, the drummer himself named his large collection of percussion instruments from all over the world »Sun Percussion«. He achieved fame with them from 1970 in the legendary experimental jazz collective Art Ensemble of Chicago, where he still plays with extreme virtuosity and in all timbres. The trio with two younger but no less talented jazz musicians presents songs by Don Moye and trumpeter Christophe Leloil. He has a long-standing collaboration with saxophone legend Archie Shepp. It is therefore only natural that Famoudou Don Moye is now standing in for Shepp’s canceled concert as part of the Reflektor curated by André Heller. Whether with Emmanuel Bex, Peter King, Archie Shepp, Ambrose Akinmusire or Cécile McLorin Salvant, Christophe Leloil is in demand on the scene and has performed on stage with many jazz greats. He also composes his own music and has released several highly acclaimed albums. Don Moye announced one of the trio’s concerts with the words: »Here you will hear songs that I have dedicated to trumpeters with whom I have enjoyed playing music throughout my life.« A great legacy that Christoph Leloil is undoubtedly up to. Simon Sieger got to know a wide variety of musical styles at weekly jam sessions in his parents’ pub in the middle of Illinois and still lives this diversity today. As a multi-instrumentalist, he switches easily between piano, organ and trombone.
